Early in our relationship my wife did this to me. And it was about something very casual, like she wanted to go over our budget that night. I told her do not ever tell me in the middle of the day that "we need to talk" and let me freak out all day at work. Especially for something that you didn't need to be discreet about in the first place

Couldn't agree more. The only thing that could be worse is when a girl you are talking to or dating starts a sentence with "I just think it's funny how." Whenever you hear those words it's time to pull the pin on the grenade

If I am in a group and need to talk privately I say this often. Some things are just not good to discuss where others can overhear and gossip.

My wife and I generally text during the day and don’t talk.
I have trained her on this matter.
Her “call me when you can” texts from years ago are now “call me when you can, nothing’s wrong.”
That let’s me know that no one is dead and she just needs a password or something.

She probably was going to tell you that she was cheating on you but decided not to when she saw you. Budget was just something she came up with spur of the moment.
