I don't think it has ever stopped being political due to the nature of the man. The Cardinals who elect are still imperfect men, as hard as they try not to let that influence them.

If we polled Catholic priests generally, Trump might have fewer fans than many might assume.

And so will Democrats with the LGBTQ+ bullshite. Catholics, or at least their priests and bishops, espouse world views that piss off both major political parties in the US. They are radically anti-abortion, do not support LGBTQ+ marriage or lifestyles, and also preach compassion when it comes to illegal immigrants living in this country.

You won't get the church to budget on those stances either - especially with abortion. They do not care.

I bet church is going to be standing room only this weekend. My wife compared it to going to work the next morning after your team wins the super bowl

The Catholicism sub Reddit pretty much despises every politician in the United States. It’s like the only corner of Reddit that hasn’t been overrun with progressives.

Some guy posted there that he was disappointed about Leo's stance on homosexuality, abortion and birth control. He got lots of down votes. It's kind of surprising to watch someone realize the Pope is, indeed, Catholic

The Church predates the Left/Right paradigm by many hundreds of years.

No Pope will, or should, fit into a neat box of American politics.

He espouses many "conservative" beliefs, but people like to completely gloss over those in favor of the flavors of the moment that don't align with him

Makes total sense. The politicians like Trump do not show compassion for illegal immigrants - deportation is a cornerstone of his platform. Catholics do not support a system of government that dehumanizes and undermines the value of human life as communism does so that pisses off a lot of redditors. And Democrats are nothing if not diametrically opposed to Catholic stances on abortion and LGBTQ+ marriage. Libertarians are uncomfortable with almost any governance, much less laws that reflect the church's values on marriage, family, caring for the poor/sick, etc. so of course hard core Catholics have some issues with that as well.

Catholicism doesn't fit into the guardrails defined by modern American politics. It's been around far longer than this country, and it will be around after this country is dissolved and gone. They couldn't care less about what American media or American politicians want at any given minute.

Reddit will ban them in no time I'm sure.

Clearly not an actual Catholic. Did they actually expect the Pope to support abortion or birth control?

Compassion and love. Sensitivity towards their personhood. Arguably mass deportations conflict with that. But so do violent gangs and human trafficking.

A lot of Catholics do roll up their sleeves and work in the really screwed up countries that these people are trying to abandon to migrate here.

Thats reasonable

We should treat them like human beings with respect and dignity as we send them back to their home countries

This is why I’m optimistic about him. Multi-lingual, Doctor of canon law, and native English speaker. He should be able to clearly articulate where he stands.

The poli board might be the vilest place on the planet when the topic of Catholicism comes up. I encourage my fellow Catholics to stay away from it.

"frick the pope."

"globalist piece of shite"

etc.

Just don't go there.

This one always cracks me up. Their heads are going to spin when they find out what the word Catholic means.

That’s not what he said. You just implied though that that is your interpretation of what he said.

That’s what you’d like but stop twisting people’s words to fit into your fixed beliefs.
