We, as a society, really dropped the ball on potential police reform

I come from a family of many cops, but I can see some fundamental flaws in our police system.

We should open up the hiring pool for cops, do away with petty things like lie detectors if a cop ever smoked Marijuana, he can’t be hired.

I know being a cop is a stressful job but they need to be held accountable when they frick up, just like regular civilians are. Cops shouldn’t be put in paid leave for obvious wrongdoings. Firings need to be more normal.

Where we fricked up as a society had nothing to do with what I just mentioned but the riots and looting. As a white guy with a bias towards cops, I was on their side. Had we kept the protests civil, we could have had a conversation and reform in the justice system. Instead, we have people wrecking businesses and innocent people. All we see is dirty laundry on the news and now people are starting to dig into the sand and take hard stands in their sides.

We missed an opportunity for some good to come out of this.

Hey. How about you take a glock, run around the city in BR responding to every distress call, deal with your life constantly being in danger, then have some crackhead point a cell phone in your face twice a night yelling WorldStar.

Then let’s talk about “police reform”. How about criminal reform? Like don’t commit fricking crime.

This will just Open it up to more potential bad cops. Most places don't care if you've smoked weed in the past already.

Lowering standards isn't a solution.

So what’s our explanation for not having this conversation any of the other times we have had the opportunity?

Or are the riots simply our newest excuse?

LOL

You'd be raising standards. Police purposefully do not hire those with an above-average IQ

Just like in a ton of other professions and industries, powerful unions make it much more difficult to fire a bad employee.

I agree. What happened across the country this weekend strengthened the argument for police. The shite going on is the exact reason why we need police. It doesn't give police carte blanche to kill people at all, but I can certainly see how the mindset of police officers mindset gets eroded over time dealing with people like that all day.

At this point, I'm not sure what the answer is and I'm not sure the divide between police and the public can be healed.

The traffic stop-based model of policing is profoundly broken and completely incompatible with a free, just society.

I mean, I’m from San Francisco, a super liberal, weed friendly place, and I have buddies in the force. They had to take lie detectors on weed. One of them didn’t get in because he didn’t pass.

People who steal and burn and terrorize have no interest in reforms or answers for that matter. They want to steal shite, burn shite down, break windows, and terrorize people they see as their enemies. They bring no answers to the table, just Problems.

Everything needs reform

You have to start voting out career politicians at every level
Pay attention to your councilmen & women
Pay attention to who is making the laws in your town, who is in charge of hiring police chiefs, who is on your civil service boards
Look at their motives, look at how they allocate your tax dollars

Everyone wants to blame the police, no one wants to blame politicians that will not pay for better officers, no one wants to blame judges who release career criminals, no one wants to blame councilmen for skimming their tax dollars

This country is fricked
Every politician on every level is corrupt

That means he probably didn't pass the polygraph. Not that he smoked weed in the past. Or, he failed his pre employment drug screen.

I took the same civil service tests and same polygraph to become a firefighter that police officers take to get hired years ago. I answered every question honestly (including if I had smoked weed in the past) and was hired with no problem. You can't be a dishonest person in that line of work. They don't care if you smoked weed in the past. They have random drug screens to see if you're actively using drugs.

Police reform is hard and those that can bring about change lack the will to bring reform.

It's a multi-pronged problem fraught with conflicts and unintended consequences. Addressing some areas of the problem likely exacerbate other problem areas within police departments.

It's something that would take a LOT of money, a LOT of time and a LOT of patience and persistence. No one with the power to make change have much of any of those.

I had my headbanged upside a copcar by a shitbird small town bully of a cop at age 19. That created a negative bias... Then saw another one almost choked to death the wrong guy. Dude was blie. Luckily I knew one of the officers that arrived on scene at the bar and we dragged the cop off the drunk guy that didn't knock off the bottle on the balcony. It was purely an accident some drunk guy knocked a bottle off a table that fell in front of a cop and shattered. He acted like everyone in the bar was trying to start a riot. When in fact it was him that started the disruptive behavior. When a police officer screws with someone while they are still developing into a man a grown man it can have a huge impact on their view of LE. Positive engagement in the community is the key to having a well policed city

They can be drama queens. I have a huge respect for them, but they have to police their own instead of letting the shitbirds get away with BS. They gotta stop protecting the shitbirds on the force.
