RummelTiger, or Rummey as his friends call him, was raised on the courts and fields of Bright, which opened in 1965. Chicken may also have joined him, when he wasn’t playing nerdy video games at the Time Saver on Transcontinental just north of W Esplanade.
Coach Ray and the P.T. Barnum of crawfish, Al Scramuzza, or simply “Coach,” taught them how to hit a curve, the truths of life, proper free throw technique, and coding. TD might not exist without Coach.
The namesake of the playground was a Heisman candidate at Drake University. An African American player, his brutal on-field attack by a Oklahoma State player in 1951 showed the racial tensions of the time. I found it surprising that a place in the heart of deep Metairie named a playground for Bright, especially since, to my knowledge, he had no connection to Metairie. So I did some digging and it turns out it’s a different Johnny Bright. This Bright was a longtime supervisor at nearby Metairie Playground when Bright opened.
Let us all join in prayer for Mr. Scramuzza, truly a visionary and friend of thousands. He may be best known as the man who popularized boiled crawfish in New Orleans, but he is far more than that to those who know him on a personal level. I met him at the Poorboy Festival in 2008. He was genuinely kind and showed me and Mother around to his favorite poorboys. What a gentleman.
