Maybe this will discourage idiots that live in Baton Rouge from using the interstate for local travel instead of using surface streets like they should.

And then all of the surface streets would be gridlocked.

I've posted variations of this before but ensure that this occurs and is 4-laned divided highway with interstate-grade would solve nearly every problem.

That and finishing the i49 from Lafayette to New Orleans as well.

And the city will be forced to upgrade them.

Interstate highways are not for local traffic. It's the people of Baton Rouge's fault that they relied on it for that for so long.

A loop (for christ's sake Lake Charles has one)

My thoughts on an outer loop:

This would help the growth going on around Pville while also (hopefully) encourage some gentrification in the northern areas.

An inner loop within the established city limits is already under way, but still quite a bit off (and doesn't really address certain problem areas like College/Lee or Highland between campus and Lee).

Why? The surface streets are barely able to handle the traffic it has now. Signals are not synced and the designs are terrible.

Then upgrade them. That Baton Rouge has no foresight doesn't change the fact that interstates aren't there for local traffic.

The Audubon bridge cost a fraction of what it will cost to build a bridge down here.

Audubon bridge cost $409m.

Just imagine adding right-of-ways, new paved interstates, and the other smaller bridges you'd need to form a complete bypass.

It would easily be over $2 billion. In order to be self-funded, I guess you'd need at least 80k riders a day paying $5 a crossing which is presently unattainable.

Using Florida blvd, Airline, and Oneal/thruway/hooper would be easier and quicker.

There's entirely too few contiguous surface streets in BR. The city should have never been allowed to grow in the manner it did.

Since when?? Go to ANY city in the US that has an interstate in it and you will find locals using it for local traffic.

The only reason LC has a loop is because I-10 doesn't go through its downtown district. The loop connects downtown to I-10.

I-10 goes right past downtown in LC. LC has a loop because Israel LaFleur saw the city was expanding south and pushed for a bridge from south LC to sulphur. This way South LC residents that worked in the plants didn't have to drive all the way downtown to get across the lake/river.

I think you're thinking of Lafayette.

The city was not designed with the interstate in mind. There are hardly any frontage roads. There are too many people that won't sign off to allow the state or city to upgrade.

The local and state government are about band aids, not solutions.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but if interstate takes me 15 mins to get from point A to point B, as opposed to 45 mins on the surface roads, I'm taking interstate. You do agree with this, don't you?

the bridge would have to be between plaquemine and white castle. There is no way a bridge could go anywhere in plaquemine. the room is just not there.

If there is enough political will, they can (and will) expropriate. With the downtown area being a bit old (and the RR going through the center of it), it would probably be tricky but they could definitely put up a bridge just north of the old Locks.

Cries of racism would rain down from the heavens if they tried that. There is a whole lot of nothing south of plaq.
