Lots of posts in here - and I do appreciate them - keep 'em coming. But, has anyone owned a Steinhart? Looking for some first hand feedback regarding quality and durability.

I find both to be overwhelming and stick to TheRolexForum

I'm not familiar with Steinhart, but the most important things are :
it must have a sapphire crystal
no gold
automatic movement

And I think the Brits are underrated and underpromoted generally speaking. Aston Martin would be my car of choice - price no object.

I like Time Zone but it is slow and hard to navigate and not the best for beginners.
TRF is great but doesn't have near the breadth of knowledge base WUS does.
To the OP's last question while I only own 1 micro-brand (a Hexa made for the WUS dive watch forum) I have held a lot of Steinharts. The reality with most of the "Swiss" microbrands is they offer very similar quality it often comes down to looks and customer service. While looks are individual customer service is why I suggested Christopher Ward.
As for microbrand dive watches there are TONS and they are well represented on the dive watch sub-forum on WUS. Most are going to have ETA, Sellita, Seiko or Miyota movements and are fine for what they are. Some of the brands are simply better values than others but you really have to look at customer service etc along with the watch itself.

For basically a one watch person I agree with sapphire but I have several plexi glass crystals and a couple of mineral glass Seiko dive watches. I agree with an automatic for a one watch person also but I rotate daily so manual winds don't bother me much, I am wearing a manual wind as I type. I also don't mind white gold and platinum watches but they look basically like stainless and rose/yellow gold doesn't look good on my Nordic complexion but anything that is not solid precious metal is tacky anyway. Someone mentioned the Triton having gold on it, it doesn;t it is a bronze watch, the material was popularized by Panerai and Gerald Genta used it first.

AR coating is a contentious issue. Some love single sided (always interior), Omega uses AR inside and outside of the crystal but it can scratch but their coatings are VERY good today. Rolex is the odd duck and uses no AR, no official reason but the consensus is it provides more flash. I prefer AR on both sides if the coating is extremely hard but you I never use that to make a buying decision.
Also don't rule out used. WUS and other forums have a healthy sellers section and a lot of watch nuts are serial flippers so like new watches (especially micro-brands) can be had at a great price.

I bought the Steinhardt GMT Ocean 1 Black as my Lsu graduation gift after doing some research.
Whenever I wear it, I always catch myself staring at it. It's very well made and has a great movement.
Only con is the illumination doesn't last through the night and it has a little weight to it.

A Seiko SKX007 or 009 - at under $200 - sends a totally different message. With those it looks like you know what you’re doing. Those are just the basic Seiko dive watches, they make plenty more for under $500 that will last a lifetime.
To OP, I was in the exact situation you were, but I was looking at Squale watches instead of steinhart. Both submariner homages. I even posted it on TD. The posters basically said don't get a homage. I ended up getting a Seiko SKX 173 and I love it. Save your money and get the real thing when you're ready.

Seiko seiko seiko in the <$800ish range. The 007 is only like $300 and is an awesome watch. It’s a good automatic diver that keeps better time than some much more expensive stuff. They look great. If you think you’re in danger of becoming a watch junkie than save your coins now.

Nothing wrong with Squale, they actually have a real history. The old 1545s were Rolex homages though.
While a little more money but can be bought well used Doxa watches are very cool, have true dive heritage and with the cushion case and beads of rice bracelet they are very unique.
Another excellent brand (especially used) would be Damasko, they offer some really cool tech for not a lot of money and are a "real" made in Germany watch.

Steinhardt will run you ~$500. I get asked all the time if it's a Rolex, but still haven't figured out how to answer that gracefully

That Stowa neo-Flieger is a good watch. The movement is based on the ETA/Valjoux 7750(4) w/o the chronograph portion. One thing to note about 7750 based movements is they wind in one direction so the oscillating weight can go nuts spinning with quick wrist movements, called the 7750 wobble, some find it annoying some it doesn't bother. I have a couple of Panerai and a Omega Mk40 with 7750 derivations and I kinda like the wobble, it makes the watch feel alive. It is most pronounced on light watches so the Stowa would really wobble, it is also audible.
