Today, a watch is a fashion statement. $100 watch states "I am poor."
Good thing I don't buy stuff for someone else's approval.
ETA: Another option is the Orient Ray. I've had it for 2 years and love it. It punches well above its weight. Get compliments on it all the time.

Good looking watch. For what I want (no bracelet-sport watch), the Seiko 5 snzg15 seems like the one.

Get a sterile modded Seiko.

My favorite watch under $100. Actually it's $52 on Amazon:

Seriously.
What kind of watch are you looking for? Rough and sporty or nicer and dressier?
Citizen has an eco-drive Pilot style watch for around the 100 mark.
Timex has some cheaper Pilot style watches for pretty cheap that has been posted already.
Seiko has several in that price range.
For rougher and sportier, I would lean towards a G-Shock watch. Ive had much better luck out of the g-shocks than Timex for durability.

I like the look of that. What do you think about the Seiko 5 snzg15?

Seiko 5 (skn809) on amazon for around 50 bucks right now. Is that a good snag?
That is a solid price you sometimes find them a couple of dollars lower but that is near bottom. Just be aware of the 37mm size, some folks dig it some find it a little too small.

No votes for Victorinox? Right now you can snag one on sale with sapphire crystal glass (very resistant to scratches) for $90-$200 depending upon band material.

I have the 17, which is very similar with a darker case and lumed numerals. I'm a fan, great value. I think dark bracelets look no bueno so I took it off immediately. Looks good with a wide variety of other strap options. Mine is surprisingly accurate.

Here is your source for all things Seiko 5, not some are JDM only and some are out of production but it gives you an idea how cool the Seiko 5 universe is:
Seiko 5 site
FYI the Seiko 5 line started in the 60s and had these 5 attributes:
1. Automatic winding
2. Day/date displayed in a single window
3. Water resistance
4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position
5. Durable case and bracelet
It has morphed over the years and this is a more modern version of the attributes:
1. Automatic Winding
2. Day-Date Window
3. Water Resistant
4. Unbreakable Mainspring (Diaflex)
5. Shock Resistant Design (Diashock)
ETA I should mention the Seiko 5s have Hardlex (a proprietary name for mineral glass) crystals as opposed to sapphire. While they don't shatter as easily as sapphire (I have never shattered a sapphire crystal even on my beaters) they will scratch and I have a couple of seriously gouged up ones in my beater box BUT they have been really beat on.

I think it's too small.

For God's sake don't buy a fashion watch (MVMT, Fossil, Chris Ward or Charlie Ward or whatever it is).

At 42ish mm?

I think I will go ahead and pick up a Seiko 5.
Is the black or blue face more versatile for everyday wear?

I've never seen a Seiko 5 at 42mm. Not even remotely close. They may exist but I don't know about them.
And if they've started making them in 42mm I'll actually look into buying one. The Seiko 5 I had was aesthetically pleasing but just too small for me.
