stem issue. Rolex is a self winding watch
When stored it runs down
To restart, stem must be unscrewed, shaft popped out,and rewound
Stem must then be screwed back in after setting to correct time
wear constantly-no problem
wear rarely- no problem
Did you just explain to me how the stem on a watch with an automatic movement works? I think you did.
Used with some mechanical sympathy the threads in the case tube should last decades without stripping at least on an automatic.
The poster I replied to is suggesting Rolex has a stem/case tube issue that is beyond normal use. I was curious what he was talking about.

You can use it every day and, if you take care of it, you can pass it on to your kid or grandkid. You can also usually get your money right back out of it pretty quickly with likely no loss and if you wait long enough (i.e. 5 years or so), it will probably have appreciated.
What other modern personal items have these attributes. Real estate and very few cars (some modern Ferraris and special Porches maybe)? Not anything that you use every day and also fits in your pocket.
I am biased as a watch nut and a fan of Rolex and many other brands. Love mechanical watches. They are a combination of art, design, engineering, function, and craftsmanship.

You can’t explain it to these low IQ Neanderthals. These are the same clowns that will drop 20k on a side by side or a 100 inch tv but have no concept of why a watch is valuable.

Then there should be no room for half measures which with your line of thinking a two-tone Datejust is. Get a Pt Day Date, I prefer the smooth bezel but if Romans and fluted trips your trigger they have you covered also.

I don't think any watch over $250 is worth the price. I prefer to donate to my favorite charity....which is my retirement accounts and my savings accounts.
But I do like the watch a lot even though I'm not a fan of the band.

Wasnt so much talking about the watch, more so about the watchband.
Not partial to all silver band, but to each his own.

That sounds like a you problem with destroying the threads. My 40yo sub has the original crown and threads.
Absolutely his problem. I've got a vintage Datejust and an Explorer II that have never had any issues. Dude is just repeating bullshite. I hear stuff like this all the time with the know-it-alls.

Favorite platinum Rolex is this discontinued Day Date II.

Posted on 6/26/23 at 4:09 pm to Obtuse1
bought it 40 years ago, used it appropriately between office and field. So two thread replacements is not considered unusual. Did it as part of the 5 year oil change for about 300 dollars for that little tiny thread

Mine is actually the "Playtona" and I don't really like modern Dattonas. When they first came out they didn't sell and then they took off after they were discontinued and disappeared out of the displays. They sell at about 2x retail on the secondary market.
One thing you really notice the first time you pick up a Pt Rolex is the weight, most Pt watches are on straps and while hefty they are still lighter than a SS watch on a band. That Pt band feels like it weighs 2 pounds they make an Au Rolex seem airy.

Not saying it's warranted but this timepiece is a women's size dainty 34mm non sports Rolex, and not particularly attractive IMO. There are MUCH better buys for $3k.
It's akin to buying a 2004 Mercedes S-class with 145K miles, "But I drive a S-class..."

I wasn’t referring to this specific watch, just the brand itself

I went down a dark alley in Manhattan's Chinatown and bought a similar looking "Rolex" for $20.

If you want to look like a toolbag, it’s the one for you.

You're prepared for the downvotes of people who can't afford it? If you could afford it, you wouldn't be asking if the watch is worth the price.
Nobody actually needs a watch to keep time any more. If you just want to keep time, buy a few Fossils and throw them away when you tire of them.
If you want to try and impress people, buy it. But understand that most people won't notice, even fewer will care, and lots of people will think you're a sucker for buying it.
