Washing Machine Won't Drain / Run on Spin Cycle (UPDATE)
Posted on 4/20/14 at 7:50 pm
Posted on 4/20/14 at 7:50 pm
Seems to work fine during all other cycles.
Unit is about 10-11 years old.
Any ideas?
TIA
UPDATE
Just wanted to thank everyone who helped.
Went ahead and changed out both the lid switch and the drain pump since the washing machine was already going to be open. And SUCCESS!
A $79 fix (including rushed shipping).
Net OT savings: $500.
Thanks, OT!

What kind of fix is that?

Broken drain pump. Those things have bearings that will lock up.
You'll have to figure out a way to get the water and wet clothes out.
Then buy a new pump and replace. It will take a couple of hours of excitement.

Is this a job that the layperson should attempt?

Same thing happened with mine, if I am reading it correctly, and it was the lid switch. Hit is a couple of good times where the switch is and jiggle the switch some

I posted a thread a while back with same issue, just mine wasn't as old. Replaced the lid switch, control board, cleaned the drain tube, and did pretty much everything else you can do short of replacing the motor. GE pretty much paid for all my replacement parts though so I wouldn't suggest messing with it like I did unless you either get that deal or have a hookup on parts. Ended up trashing it and getting a new one.
Hope your luck is better than mine. Washers suck.

Thanks.
Since it's an older unit, I foresee a trip to Lowe's for a new washer tomorrow.

Yeah, could be the lid switch, too. Confirm that first.
If it is the drain pump, I think one will cost in the $40 range, not sure though, and you'll have to turn the washer on its side to get to the drain pump on the bottom. Only some clamps on the inlet and outlet hoses. The pump itself is bolted with some sheetmetal screws to the frame of the washer. Not real difficult, just bulky and cumbersome.
On the 1-10 pain in the arse scale, I'd give it a 4.

Seems like that would obstruct the washer from working during any of the cycles, though, no?

This is correct.
My first instinct was also the filter pump. It's not a bad fix. Google some troubleshooting videos. To drain the water, you can take out the wet clothes and use a shop vac. Move it outside before you tip it over.

When the lid is open, the washer will fill but it won't wash, spin, rinse, etc. Try to see if it's mechanical first ... stuck, spring fell off whatever. Most often the button breaks and opens the electrical circuit to look like an open lid. If you eliminate the switch as a possibility, then move on to the drain pump.
Get your model number, search for a parts store. They frequently have videos showing the repair.

Mine is 25 years old and still kicking.

The exact same thing happened to one of the washers in one of my rental properties. Wouldn't spin and wouldn't drain.
Lowes/Home Depot didn't have the switch. Had to go to a specialty store(about $40). Watched a five minute YouTube vid on how do it. It takes about ten mins.
ETA: my washer would run properly except for spinning and draining
On the pain in the arse scale it's only a one beer project.

Mine went through the agitation cycle, and would not spin or drain after. I banged on the top by the switch a couple of good times and it worked. Replaced the switch a few days later and all was good
*I'm not a washing machine repair man, but all of the ones with the lid on the top I have seen will agitate when the lid is open, they just won't spin when it is open
