It's kind of hard to determine because he was in a popular band and had to put out content at a rapid clip. His band needed lyrics. Had he been a traditional poet he probably wouldn't have published most of the stuff he wrote for the Doors. He had his moments and had he published only those moments he would probably be more well regarded as a poet.
