re: Was Huey P Long or Edwin Edwards a bigger figure in Louisiana history?

The last time Louisiana was ever relevant or important was under Huey Long and we’ve been on tDecline ever since. FACT. He singlehandedly dragged us into a tier above Mississippi and Arkansas (and formerly Alabama but they’ve since passed us up). We are still riding that man’s coattails.

Good question, Huey had his eyes on the Presidency and, for a short period enjoyed national appeal. But your question was about "...in Louisiana history?" So the answer is Edwin. Four terms is about as many as anyone could win.

Long actually did a lot that improved the state. Built bridges, roads, etc. He even improved the quality of education.
Huey Long was a disaster for Louisiana. He made corruption de rigueur. This is why Louisiana is almost an island of stagnation in a sea of American economic expansion.

People who can put Long and “good” in the same sentence are the reason Louisiana is the way it is now.

Huey P. Long was a crook. Louisiana likes crooks.
Edwin Edwards could teach HPL some things about being a crook.
As long as the democrats control the govenors office Louisiana will always will be at the bottom of every economic category in the nation. The only industry Louisiana had going for itself was Oil & Gas, and if Creepy Joe Biden gets in the Oval Office, that industry will be destroyed.
In spite of clear evidence that democrats have repeatedly screwed the people of Louisiana, the voters just keep electing democrats to the Govenors office.
I love Louisiana, but you can't argue with stupid.

At least Huey had the good sense to get assassinated.
Further proof Huey Long is America’s worst governor of all-time. Long was not assassinated. It’s propaganda. Long died as a result of his thugs executing a man who punched him. They shot so many bullets, some ricocheted off the marble and into Huey.. You can still see the bullet marks in the hallway of the capitol. The man punched Long because Long ruined his father’s life.
Long is still a cancer to Louisiana. Blow up the statue and both bridges.

shame the state was saddled with a populist crook like Edwards during the oil & gas hayday. With the right leadership then, so many of Louisiana's current budget and tax problems wouldn't exist
And to think that we had to choose between David duke and ol Ed-win for governor tells a lot about the Louisiana voting base.

You gotta go back to the historical context of each to really compare. I personally think HPL did more for the State on the surface; but he was, in many ways, very much like a racketeer. However, back then people in west, central and North La (anywhere outside of New Orleans basically) were getting ramrodded by pre-existing political corruption which is why a guy like Long was able to get where he got. Very interesting figure, but not sure how I feel about New Deal era type politics and all that socialism shite. The man had style though.
Edit: always heard a story about him giving a political speech on a tree stump, when he was running for something early on, and he was talking to a bunch of country people and said that the opponents daughter was " a THESPIAN" and they all gasped because I guess they thought he meant lesbian or something else. whether or not that is true remains to be seen. Definitely knew how to cater to an audience.

Long did 10x more for the state in his one term than Edwards did for the state in his four terms.

I learned the story last year while touring the capitol building. Fascinating place with those bullet holes and bomb damage.

It was his father-in-law, Judge Pavy from St. Landry Parish, who’s life Long ruined. Gerrymandered him out of a job.
