Pretty obvious, really.

so, you don't understand the concept of "workphone" , is that right?

That's a weak arse IT department. Normally we just remotely wipe the device.
Maybe you can help the FBI out, they seem to be having a lot of trouble unlocking phones.

I would ignore them from here on out. You don't owe them anything. If they take you to court then you obviously have to go. If you can face criminal charges for whatever is on the phone...
Flee!!!
Flee!!!

I can't imagine there is anything on the phone that isn't on a cloud. Why don't they just restore it and start over.

This same thing happened to me.
They handed me a company form acknowledging that I turned over company property. I signed it and wiped out all conversations in the phone. Once it was in his hand he asked for the password to the phone.
I was about to give it up when in the moment still being bitter about the whole thing I told him I signed your form, it's your phone now.

Did this idiot ever specify if he bought/owned the phone or not?

The issue isn't the physical phone. He agrees that they own the physical phone.
This is a hypothetical anyway, I'm pretty sure.

"Sorry. I forgot the password"
Posted on 2/18/16 at 7:37 pm to steeltiger17
If it is signed into your icloud just remote wipe it.
Posted on 2/18/16 at 7:38 pm to steeltiger17
Tell him to go get it.

Oh. One comment he made seemed like implying the opposite, but still ambiguous.

You really don't have to give them a password. Since you are fired. If you were still working there and hoped to keep your job you would have to give it to them.
.
Tell them you forgot it.
.
Let them spend the time and money trying to get a court order.

OP, never, ever burn bridges. You never know if and when you need to cross one back again. So, stop being a dick.

Do this. Walk in his office, drop the phone on the floor, whip your dick out and piss on the phone, as you walk out the door tell him the password is "kiss my arse".

Company phone, company property. The courts have ruled on this many times.
