Yea another Rome thread, I've been studying Rome and it's bringing out these old questions in my mind.

Anyway, Caesar Augustus/Octavian/Gaius Julius Caesar, ruled Rome for 40+ years and although he was married for something like 50 years as well, he only ever had one biological child (a daughter). Meanwhile he seems to have been overly close to his second in command/eventual Son-in-law Marcus Agrippa, giving him power, input, and even a ring at one point...

Now male-male sex was nothing new or crazy in Rome, it was really common actually, but having gay sex didn't seem to make you considered "gay" by Roman standards. But to me at least, it seems like Augustus may have actually been attracted to men and not to women, mainly Agrippa

my understanding of roman history isn't such that I'm aware of Octavian's sexual persuasion; however, bisexuality wasn't uncommon among the elites in roman society.

I wouldn't say it was common. Gays are trying to rewrite antiquity just like they do past hollywood stars.

I agree with this statement. I am not saying that there were no homosexuals in Rome but it certainly was not as common as advertised today.

I don't believe we will ever know whether he was or was not. Remember that the victors write history the way they want it to be perceived. Any history written about him after his death will not be accurate. I believe the history of most wars to be inaccurate when they are written after the war has ended by the winners.

Like claiming C.A. was in that pre-disco antiquity band, Village Emperors.

Meh it was common but they didn't see themselves as gay b/c they were pitching and not catching.

They would take the house slave and just do what ever they wanted.

Allow me to rephrase

Among the elites of both roman and Greek society it was not as uncommon as it was in the rest of their societies

I do think there is a misconception that everybody fricked everybody and that is wasn't looked down upon.

Considering Agrippa married Augustus' daughter and produced five children with her, I don't think so.

By his third wife, Julia the Elder (daughter of Augustus), he had five children: Gaius Caesar, Julia the Younger, Lucius Caesar, Agrippina the Elder (wife of Germanicus, mother of the Emperor Caligula and Empress Agrippina the Younger), and Agrippa Postumus (a posthumous son).

So was Octavion after Julius died, he wanted to be connected to him in the peoples minds.

I think he went by Octavion Gaius Julius Caesar or something, but the people called him Caesar, the military called him Gaius, and his friends called him Octavion. And then eventually he went by Augustus, but everyone called him Princept
