Yeah, I think he was probably first referred to as Gaius Octavius, or less formally as Octavius.
Then he was probably referred to as Caesar in memory of his adoptive father and to preserve his line in the minds of legions he commanded.
Then he was referred to as Imperator by his army, though probably still Caesar by most others.
Finally, he was probably referred to as Augustus, probably referring to the connotation of that word as "Sacred One" or something similar. Perhaps "Majestic."
I doubt he went by Princeps after defeating Marc Antony and Cleopatra. No one was under any delusions at that point. Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

He didn't even get the name Augustus until after that, hell he technically turned down positions of power after that (of course this was all a ploy for goodwill of citizens). He went by Princepts specifically bc he had total control after the civil war but he had seen what happens when you freely admit that. Hell he was technically a tribune at the start of his empirical reign, beneath the Consuls

Oh I was just saying that I think he did go by Princepts after that, bc he wasn't Princepts before that, I think they made that title for him

Well this is sort of true. It was not frowned upon to take a young male lover, like around their early to mid teen years. But it was looked down upon for two grown men having sexual relations. They viewed the male who took the role of the female in sex as giving up his manhood.
Really they were closer to accepting what we now consider to be molestation of young boys than full blown homo lifestyle. To put it in terms everyone can understand, Jerry Sandusky would not be out of place in Rome. But people like Elton John would.

He was a very thin and sickly man whose grey-eyed gaze was unsettling to all who met it. He was the quintessential cold, calculating leader. I'm not sure he was ever interested in men or women.

Well in some ways they were like San Francisco but in other ways they were more like the Bible Belt of the American South. There are many modern misconceptions about the Romans and sex.

Yes. It was common for a mentor to have sex with a pupil, but a grown, gay couple would have been seriously frowned upon.
Also, companionship was very important to ancient people, and female companionship was not desired. This is why Alexander gets accused of being gay. He was no gayer than Gilgamesh, who also had a famous companion.

I know. I'm just trying to illustrate the high regard for worthy companionship that the ancients had. Gilgamesh was a mess before Enkidu showed up. His people all believed that he needed a worthy companion, but it was anything but a homosexual relationship.

I'm surprised that Caesar hasn't gotten the gay treatment. Most of the other great conquerors have gotten the same treatment.

i will add yet another tidbit of information to this thread about gay sex in ancient times - it was typically not penetrative. a few posters have pointed out that the "catchers" were considered effeminate. as such, gay sex tended to be intercrural, or between the thighs.
