How dare Clinton not know the future
What puzzles me most about this angle of attacks is that Clinton made multiple very serious attempts to get him, dead or alive, ranging to creating a covert paramilitary group under CIA devoted to locating and arresting/assassinating bin Laden to overt actions such as leveling his training camp with 66 Tomahawks, only barely missing him.
He even got some negative press for how focused he was on Osama.
It's not like he ignored him and it bit us in the arse.

Politicians not representing our interests? I'm not even surprised, much less pissed. It would be just as productive to be pissed at the sun going down every night.
It's not only our best interests, but wouldn't it be in their best interest to have taken him out then?

watched it and the one before as well. many chances all around were missed. someone explained it as "bureaucratic ineptness" (REALLY), when they let the blind man into the US after Sadat's assassination. that is an understatement. the fact we rely on standard gov't workers to do top security work is very scary.

Since when does the Government admit failure? We got him, they used his name as ammunition for years. I used to watch footage of OBL and think to myself...his mouth sure looks funny when he talks.. technology has gotten better these days.

Yeah, but after those attempts, he pretty much stopped. Sure we had intel on him but he made no attempts to go after him after the Tomahawks.
The paramilitary group was ultimately told to stand down as well.

I was in the Military then and we had OBL dead to rights in Afghanistan. Clinton would not authorize the cruise missle strike because we couldn't assure him that there would be no collateral damage. We lost a shite ton of great General Officers under Bill Clinton because they hated his and Hillary's asses!
You are full of shite. Cruise missiles against a cave network miles under the ground?
Google Tora Bora, there was nothing there to damage collaterally.

I think he's referring to the time pre-9/11 we spotted Bin Laden in the open there and had the ability to strike, but didn't because a Saudi royal family plane was nearby.
I remember seeing this on a program but the details are fuzzy, but essentially killing him would have taken out royals which obviously would have caused some issues.

Well, yeah.
After he stopped being President he kinda had to stop.
Paramilitary group was told to stand down years after 9/11, and there was a CIA sponsored assassination attempt months before Bush's election.
It's too bad he didn't have the skills of Obama in doing legal grey area targeted assassinations.

Yet he did try to take him out on at least one occasion...

Did I mention anything about Tora Bora butt boy? The time I am talking about he had traveled to a meeting. But I bet you know it all and you have had access to MEF level intel dumps?

I thought the only time the paramilitary group was up and running was for a one time deal where they were gonna go get him at his compound in Afghanistan but it was deemed not reasonable because they would've done a frontal assault on a well defended compound.

Kind of a weird coincidence of a story I happened to run across just now.
Los Angeles Times
Ouch. I'm not second guessing this one, as being "responsible" for killing a bunch of kids would be tough, but the timing of this statement must have been hard to reflect on just a few hours after he made it.
Also interesting how he refers to Kandahar, a place we all have heard of now.
Los Angeles Times
quote:
A day before Sept. 11, 2001, former President Bill Clinton told an audience that he could have had Osama bin Laden killed, but chose not to, because an attack could have endangered innocent women and children in Afghanistan.
quote:
“I nearly got him. And I could have killed him, but I would have to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then I would have been no better than him.” “And so I didn’t do it,” the former commander in chief says.
Hours after Clinton spoke of his role in the 1998 decision to not attempt to kill Bin Laden, the 2001 terror attack was underway in the United States.
