The first one I ever went to was about 1984 in Clearwater, FL (I don't even think they were in Louisiana yet, or barely).

This was when Sam Walton was still a live. He made it a point to sell American made goods. The store was awesome, clean, etc. This was also before it had groceries.

His food stores were called "Food for Less". I have only seen them in Arkansas.

I bet you he turned over in his grave when he saw what his family did to his life's work, being the largest importer of Chinese shite.

He was never about the money, even though he was richest man in America at the time of his death.

What blows my mind is that Walton actually knew J.C. Penney

It was around 83-84 when they opened one up in my hometown. Back then they didn't have groceries. What's funny is they closed that one down back in the mid90s and opened up a Super Walmart to replace it. But I can still remember how the old one was laid out.

ironic, since his kids are some of the country's greatest beneficiaries of NAFTA.

This is incorrect. Their home office was also in Bentonville, but Sam did not own it anywhere near 1984. I believe he bought them out around 1989. Not sure what happened to food 4 less after that, but you will occasionally see one every now and then.

I still remember when they moved their Cheap Chinese clothes (huge profit margins and where they make their money) right next to the groceries (low profit margins, essentially a loss leader to get you into the store)

Ah, nostalgia...

The ironic thing about Walmart is I can remember back in the 80s, they were all about "Made in the USA" and how they were creating American jobs. They don't talk about that much now.

That's just how you have to play the game if you want to be competitive though. If they were still made here they would cost a fortune and invite other companies to undercut them with foreign made goods. Most of their apparel manufacturing is getting ready to be done in Vietnam. You are about to see Vietnam become a major player in manufacturing in the next decade.

Summer of '81, I was working for a pipeline company and we'd clear right of way across the southern part of Louisiana. That's back when Wal-Mart was keeping out of the larger towns, so I'd never seen one. They had just expanded into south Louisiana. We were in some tiny town and stopped in.

I remember looking at the polo-shirts and being amazed that they were like half the price of any cheap polo shirt that I'd ever seen. We couldn't get over how cheap everything was.

I think the first one I went to was at Cortana in the late 1980s. It had rubberized reddish/orange floor in some parts with a truncated dome pattern so people would not slip.

That's all I remember except that it was a lot smaller than the newer Wal Marts.

Because most Americans these days would go to another store and by the cheap China made shite.
