Who lets their 17 year old high schooler drive around at 1am on New Years Eve?
I did. Just to bring a friend home who lives nearby and come right back. Had the whole safety talk beforehand. Prayed after they left and when they got home. At this age, you know that in less than a year, you won’t be there every day so you try to let them have a taste of independence and see how they handle it. As a parent, you get shite on for being overprotective then shite on for not protecting enough.

The law gets weird with wrecks, fault, and DWI. I have a family member who was 100% at fault for a wreck where she made a u-turn in front of another vehicle and got hit. The other driver had been drinking, so they were found to be 100% at fault. That never really sat well with me, if we're being honest. My family member clearly caused that wreck.

I did. You have to let them off the leash at some point.

Not on NYE. I don't even drive on NYE after dark because of all the drunks on the road. An inexperienced young driver would have even less skill, vigilance, reaction time etc. needed to respond to or handle the what ifs versus someone that has been driving for years. Not worth the risk for me.

quote:Yeah, that's pretty twisted. We've picked this one crime, usually a misdemeanor, and decided that anyone who commits it basically loses whole categories of rights that I would argue are God-given, e.g. the right to be judged fairly.

Another manifestation of it that I see is this notion that, for example, a driver who causes a horrible wreck is somehow less culpable if his toxicological tests come back negative.

That’s a valid argument. My kid was actually pretty traumatized by what they saw last night. It was about half a mile from our house and on a stretch of road i wasn’t worried about. I mostly fear them driving on 2-lane roads with a high speed limit like Hwy 16. This morning we talked about seatbelts and watching for the mistakes of other drivers. My fear is having them go away to college with nearly zero life experience. Talk about wolves. I didn’t expect them to experience what they did on a 5-minute drive, though. I’m sure the kid who died’s parents didn’t either.

My granddaughter was a cheerleader at Walker for 4 years and was good friends with her. She is devastated! My heart hurts for the family. A very good family!

Prayers for them. I can’t even imagine.

Accidents happen every day. A parent’s job is to teach them to be responsible and discipline them when needed. I really don’t understand what some of you posters want.

I would think most 17 year olds may have a 12:00 curfew from their parents. On NYE, 12:00 is the highlight. A 17 year old driving at 1 am is quite normal. Do you expect the 17 year old to be home before midnight on NYE?
