Not in restaurant service. The tip is their pay. They do receive a small amount of pay otherwise but it doesn't amount to anything.

I'm pretty sure employers are required to step in and cover their pay if wages + tips don't amount to at least the traditional federal minimum wage.

agreed here though. I used to work 30-40 hours and my check after a week was around $60-$70 since you get taxed a lot more on credit card tips. So yes, people in service industry make the serious majority of their money off tips.

And it’s okay to think the system is fricked up, but someone not tipping 15-20% when actually sitting in the restaurant isn’t helping to fix the system. They are just being a cheap jackass. Dont sit in a restaurant if you dont tip.

This, too.

You aren't punishing anybody who is actually at fault by doing that.

Most of you underestimate what it takes and just think "all my server does is write down my order and fill my coke"

I'm not underestimating anything. I did that crap in college. For large orders too. Two hours is absurd.

They are not there to make minimum wage. If they were they would just go get a minimum wage job. This is a tip- based job that they chose because they want more for themselves and their families.

Show a little respect for her hard work. Making sure little Becky got extra sweet potato fries, Johnny got extra bread, and Pastor Bob like medium well is not the cake walk some are pretending it is. Tip her.

The whole tipping system is stupid. But it is the system and until it changes, she will do her part and you should do yours.

Have this, , gratis.

People do not know how these people are paid. That's the problem. This very thread proves most people think carry out folks are paid more traditionally.

It's a federal law. If your hourly wage plus the amount you collect in tips is less than federal minimum wage of $7.25/hr, the employer is required to make up the difference.

Have you ever actually worked in the service industry??

It is very much the norm to tip on takeout from a sit down restaurant. Like I said...it is not the norm to tip like you normally would if you sat down and ate there...but it is customary to give a small tip(like around 10%) of your order.

I just don't agree with this. There is no service rendered. The preparation of the food is built into the price of the food.

I generally tip 20% when I go to a restaurant. But, I am paying for the service with the tip.

I would think that the service industry should see any tips on takeout orders as free money.

That's called regular tasks of their job. No tip required.

Do they still make 2.15 a hour?

No one took your order? No one wrang it up? No one put it all together? No one checked you out?

I'm sure this has been said 1000 times in here, but to-go station typically has a minimum wage salary if they are just covering to-go.

Only servers with a section make the $2.13/hr

ETA: Worked at restaurants for years. Never EXPECTED tips from to-go. They were nice, and appreciated, and usually did come on large corporate orders. But they were not an expectation.

You are right. That takes about 4 minutes. At $15/hour, that would be about a quarter

And it's been said a 1000 times also that a lot of places don't have a to-go person and it's those 2.13/hr servers covering it.

But when someone pours you a solid stout that takes 30 seconds you tip $1 at least I bet.

Has it been determined what type of place the OP is?

Even still, I've served at 8-9 different restaurants and never seen a server with a section run to-go, unless its a bartender. Not disputing that it happens, but that's a shitty practice by the manager b/c he KNOWS to-go is not a station that generates tips by percentage of sales. And customers should not be expected to know the difference.
