VW exploring possible partnership or merger with Ford

Ford and Volkswagen flirting with relationship possibilities

Auto industry observers say Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen would be an ideal marriage as the two carmakers engage in serious discussions about a potential partnership with unlimited potential.
“Something big is brewing,” said John McElroy, Autoline.tv host and longtime industry analyst.
“Look, if it isn’t, (Ford CEO) Jim Hackett can't survive. He has got to drop a bombshell on the industry.”

“So, the immediate question before Ford now is, does one do a difficult but orderly marriage now or wait to be forced to do a disorderly fire sale under duress later?

Investment analysts have been critical of the leadership, in part saying Hackett hasn't been clear about the path forward. Moody's Investors Service in August downgraded Ford's investment rating to one notch above junk, and stock is dipping to post-recession lows in recent weeks, making analysts wonder whether someone might decide to accumulate shares during this time of great anticipation.
Volkswagen, to be sure, has its own problems. After being caught cheating on diesel emissions tests, it has been fined a total of nearly $33 billion after German prosecutors on Tuesday penalized its Audi subsidiary $926 million. Former VW environmental manager Oliver Schmidt was sentenced by a Detroit federal district court judge to seven years in prison in the scandal.
Nonetheless, VW achieved its goal two years ago of becoming the world's largest automaker. Ford is fifth.
This would be a marriage between a big truck maker with really crappy cars and a massive car maker with almost no truck offerings. Could definitely make a dent in a lot of markets this way.
Wonder if this will result in better design and durability from Ford products in North America and more truck designs from VW moving forward.

A coyote powered A5 sedan? Yes please.

Ford will be gone soon. This would be terrible on them if they do this IMO.
Ford is already considering cutting back on some vehicles due to muh tariffs.

Makes sense with Ford dropping cars, which they suck at. My buddy's Ford Focus suuuucks. Dude had it for 9 months of the first year because of maintenance issues.

They want to get out of the sedan market entirely because they can't sell any of them.

That too.

The Focus may be the worst car on the market today. The ancient Taurus isn't far behind.
There is a reason Ford is giving up on cars. They suck at it.

The main thing I see happening is the Ford family cashing out.
The company is circling the drain and if they get a lifeline, they may as well take it.

Those the diesels from the emissions scandal or do they have a different large inventory sitting around?

Less than 10 years ago, it looked like they had solid leadership. They've basically ignored everything but the F150 since then. They've lost ground in Europe and can't keep up with General Motors or VW in China.
If they can't find a partner like VW or Hyundai soon, they are not going to be around much longer.
Sad to see a big part of the American auto industry dying like this.

You don't think that's bad on them as a company??

This would have been Henry Ford's dream back in '39.

Honestly, it's kinda the only way either company can survive, imo. Ford's sedans are cratering with their truck market keeping them afloat. Volkswagon's sedans are doing fantastic, but the fines and their poor quality trucks and SUV's are putting them in serious dire straits. It seems like these companies would be a perfect match for one-another as each's strengths match the other's weaknesses. They need to find a way to make this happen.

quote:yes....... everyone of those cars was great and are rotting away because of a cheat in the electrical system. This was similar to the NFL throwing the book at the Saints for bounty gate in terms of industry.
Oh yeah?
The government put the american advancement of diesel motors back a decade or 2 with what they did for VW. And for them to not allow them to resell the vehicles in other countries is ABSURD.
So please read up about what really happened before you think those huge lots with all the cars are full of clunkers.
