Is anyone involved in any organizations in Baton Rouge that you enjoy being a part of? I have some spare time and I think I should do something productive with it. Thanks.

Just contact an organization you're interested in directly. I build sets for the local little theatre...I just called them and told them I wanted to help support them, they said come on by. It was pretty darn easy.

I really enjoyed my time playing with dogs at the animal shelter, had to stop because of other obligations but as soon as I have more time I plan on going back.

I joined APO (Alpha Phi Omega) which is a service fraternity. They usually do volunteer things around BR and campus.

Habitat for humanity is a good place to start as well. Boys and girls club, theyre always looking for help.

Be a reading or math friend for VIPS: volunteers in public schools.

Helping Hands Ministry

We build wheel chair ramps for the disabled as well as other projects.

If you are truly interested, call 225 647-4678 and ask about the Helping Hands Ministry.

I know you asked about Baton Rouge, but maybe there is something similar. I volunteer for something in Memphis called Arise 2 Read where I go to schools and read with 2nd grade kids who are behind on their reading.

I volunteered there in '13 &14, helped clients look for work, apply for jobs, use the computer.
Randy is great to work with. I should probably go back.

VIPS,-volunteers in public schools. If you'd enjoy mentoring, reading, general school work with a student. Very rewarding!
Illiteracy is a huge factor in homelessness obviously. And every kid that learns to read has better chance to make it.
You could probably just Google volunteer baton rouge & check out the list.

Go to a VFW and make friends with a bunch of crazy Nam Vets. They may let you call bingo.

The VFW also burns unused bingo cards..after reading the McD Monopoly article, I have a great idea.

Look into Civil Air Patrol. Squadrons in Baton Rouge, Ascension and other parishes in the state.

Don't have to be a pilot, they need and teach aerial photography, navigation, ground/electronic search, cell phone forensics and they have a need for support roles in Finance, Personnel, Public Affairs, Legal, Logistics, etc.

quote:

As a Total Force partner and Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol is there to search for and find the lost, provide comfort in times of disaster and work to keep the homeland safe. Its 60,000 members selflessly devote their time, energy and expertise toward the well-being of their communities, while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace/STEM education.

See if Team Rubicon is in your area. They service wherever there is a natural disaster
