In recent years, many Americans have embraced vitamin D and fish oil pills, their enthusiasm fueled by a steady trickle of suggestive research studies linking higher levels of vitamin D with lower rates of cancer and other ills, and fish consumption with reduced heart disease

quote:

Now a large and rigorous government-funded randomized trial — the only such study of omega-3 fish oils ever carried out in healthy adults, and the largest trial ever done of high-dose vitamin D — has found the supplements do not lower cancer rates in healthy adults. Nor do they reduce the rate of major cardiovascular events, a composite of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from cardiovascular disease. The trial is of the kind considered the gold standard in medicine.

quote:

“It’s disappointing, but there have always been such high expectations that vitamin D can do all these different things,” said Dr. Clifford J. Rosen of the Maine Medical Center Research Institute in Scarborough, who was a co-author of an editorial on the studies in The New England Journal of Medicine. He said doctors had engaged in “magical thinking about vitamin D,” often testing their patients’ blood levels and advising them to take supplements. “In terms of preventing cancer, I think the door is closed. I don’t think there is anything there,” Dr. Rosen said. The study also showed that omega-3 fatty acid supplements do not reduce major cardiovascular events or cancer, “period,” he said. “That’s what people should take home with them.”

High doses of Omegas 3s are immunosuppressive too.

And that’s bad.

I bet they do help, and they just don’t want you to live longer by taking them.

2000 iu ain’t shite. Your body doesn’t efficiently absorb supplements so you would need a much higher dose to see if it is effective.

These medical groups have been telling us for decades that bacon is terrible for us.

Time to start eating a pack of bacon a day.

Is this the same government who told us fats were bad and sugar good? Same government who made the food pyramid? The one that can’t make its mind up if eggs are good or bad?

That’s a lie. Last year for my dr visit I had high cholesterol and he wanted to put me on medicine to control it which I declined. I’m already on medicine for hypertension (terrible, terrible family history for males with cardiovascular issues). After some research and talking with a few of my friends who looked into diet changes related to cancer I started taking flaxseed oil, which is high in omega-3. 6 months later I go back to the dr and my cholesterol is back to normal. Safe to say that article is pretty much bullshite and the govt will 100% lie to us about anything to keep the people from bettering ourselves in order to keep us on the governmental teet.

My cholesterol is right above max range. I was taking fish oil omega 3 instead of prescription for about 2 years and my cholesterol never dropped.

You changed your diet, taking flaxseed oil was just money you wasted.

Let me break it down for those of you who don't have a clue about the history of research here. Your bodies can't utilize huge quantities of Omega-3's, you don't have the genetics unless you have very immediate Inuit ancestry. This whole fad started with the observation that Greenland Inuits have reduced rates of heart attacks compared to Westerners (never mind that they had increased rates of other diseases). Tons of studies (many of them gov't backed) published and many of them with contradicting results and almost none of them have ever been duplicated. You don't need supplementation if you have a good diet and are moderately active, buying snake oil and claiming it has helped you is simply you justifying the wasted money.

I didn’t change my diet because it was already decent. I never stopped eating red meat, never stopped eating carbs, and even still ate 1 or 2 fast food meals a week. If you would like to read what I said again I said that I looked into diet changes related to cancer and started taking flaxseed oil. I did not say that I changed my diet. The only thing that changed in my routine was adding the flaxseed oil to my daily regime. And contrary to what you believe it did work.

I don't know of many people historically claiming they prevent cancer or hd. Fish oil is much better at preventing strokes. Turmeric is the way to go to prevent cancer. Exercise or blood thinner for hd.

I feel compelled to weigh in

I would place very little faith in nutritional studies (too many variables in play with very poor understanding of context).

Example:

The proper function of Vit D is dependent on a symphony of interactions with other fat soluble vitamins that are often lacking in the American diet

These studies attempt to study naturally occurring compounds *in isolation using the one drug/one cure model. Nature does not work that way...

On the Trail of the Elusive X-Factor: A Sixty-Two-Year-Old Mystery Finally Solved FEBRUARY 14, 2008 BY CHRISTOPHER MASTERJOHN

quote:

Article Summary In 1945, Dr. Weston Price described “a new vitamin-like activator” that played an influential role in the utilization of minerals, protection from tooth decay, growth and development, reproduction, protection against heart disease and the function of the brain.Using a chemical test, he determined that this compound—which he called Activator X—occurred in the butterfat, organs and fat of animals consuming rapidly growing green grass, and also in certain sea foods such as fish eggs.Dr. Price died before research by Russian scientists became known in the West. These scientists used the same chemical test to measure a compound similar to vitamin K.Vitamin K2 is produced by animal tissues, including the mammary glands, from vitamin K1, which occurs in rapidly growing green plants.A growing body of published research confirms Dr. Price’s discoveries, namely that vitamin K2 is important for the utilization of minerals, protects against tooth decay, supports growth and development, is involved in normal reproduction, protects against calcification of the arteries leading to heart disease, and is a major component of the brain.Vitamin K2 works synergistically with the two other “fat-soluble activators” that Price studied, vitamins A and D. Vitamins A and D signal to the cells to produce certain proteins and vitamin K then activates these proteins.Vitamin K2 plays a crucial role in the development of the facial bones, and its presence in the diets of nonindustrialized peoples explains the wide facial structure and freedom from dental deformities that Weston Price observed.

Look to evolution / millennia of history to inform us:

Get vitamin D from safe sun exposure
Supplement under supervision with lab checks

Stick to fatty fish for omega 3 (straight from the source as rancid oil can be inflammatory leading to confusing studies misinterpreted by some...)

Remember that life in 2018 is a “fad” with regards to human history...

A lament with regards to where we are with “science”:

DR RUPERT SHELDRAKE, Ph.D. (born 28 June 1942) is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and ten books. A former Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he studied natural sciences at Cambridge University, where he was a Scholar of Clare College, took a double first class honours degree and was awarded the University Botany Prize. He then studied philosophy and history of science at Harvard University, where he was a Frank Knox Fellow, before returning to Cambridge, where he took a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, where he was Director of Studies in biochemistry and cell biology. As the Rosenheim Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he carried out research on the development of plants and the ageing of cells in the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University.

Rupert Sheldrake outlines 10 dogmas he has found to exist within mainstream science today. He states that when you look at each of these scientifically, you see that they are not actually true.

1. Nature is mechanical or machine like

2. All matter is unconscious

3. The laws or constants of nature are fixed

4. The total amount of matter and energy is always the same

5. Nature is purposeless

6. Biological heredity is material

7. Memories are stored inside your brain

8. Your mind is inside your head

9. Psychic phenomena like telepathy is not possible

10. Mechanistic medicine is the only kind that works
