The USGS just has a range of potential deaths for type and strength of earthquake. Rarely do final tallies reach that range. The 2023 Turkey earthquake death toll made it into the window, but not really near the upper end of 100,000.
Regardless, I'm talking more in regard to official missing totals, generally given out by local officials and response efforts. That number usually starts high and gets pared down as more people are accounted for — either dead, rescued, or found elsewhere. As responders have gotten into more of these villages and towns the number of missing has only gone up, by more than 2,000.

Today, on 30 August 2026, a massive flood has struck Mailung in Rasuwa District of Nepal.
The water level of the Bhote Koshi River has risen rapidly, leading to an immediate emergency situation in that area, which had already been devastated by the catastrophic cross-border flash flood that occurred on Wednesday, 26 August.
Due to the river's expanding reach, the Nepal Army had already begun the task of relocating the remaining residents of Mailung to higher and safer locations early this morning.

Back in the early 70s, growing up in Tulsa, OK, they had a system of natural and man-made creeks for drainage.
My friends and I would go down into them and fish.
The sides were rather steep. One time we were down in a creek fishing. There had been a heavy thunderstorm north of town, but no rain where we were.

A valuable learning experience. A lot of people just don't know the dangers of flash flooding in that part of the country. Monsoon season is dangerous for the very scenario you described.

I don't understand why people stand there watching it. I'd be headed for higher ground the moment I saw the water rising.
Reminds me of the tsunami that hit Thailand however many years ago.
People walked out into the ocean trying to figure out where the water went. They found out soon enough.

1,056 dead and ~4,500 missing as of this morning.
Nepalese officials are taking DNA samples and burying bodies in a "mass" grave. It seems to be more of a mass grave site where each grave/body has an identifiable marker. Man, that has to be a miserable job and process. It is just sad.

Up to 1,114 dead and still around 4,500 missing. Officials from Nepal say ~12,000 have been rescued. Seeing the death toll rise and the number of rescued go up while the missing number remains unchanged or continues to rise is disheartening.

Saw one clip where a multi storied school building once stood with 900 kids,
who all got out alive.
