It’s one of the biggest scams going.

They can serve 20 years, retire with a military pension AND 100% disability, then go work for the federal government for 20 years and retire with social security AND a federal pension.

What part of working two careers worth of jobs to qualify for those benefits is a scam exactly?

Downvoters don't want to explain this super awesome scam? Not shocking

Because dickhead... when you use the term, VET, you're referring to ALL of them. And unless you've been there and done that... just sit down. If you have and you're getting VA COMPENSATION, because it's not a VA Disability... then great. If you're not, have not and never plan to... then just sit down.

That's called integrity... and you either have it or you never did. Don't judge others, just judge yourself.

Are you a veteran? I am one...Army. Don't start spouting some foolishness unless you are one and you have this type of issue.

Doesn't explain why it's ballooned so drastically lately (in participants and dollars), in relative peacetime. Is it really that much of a stretch that there's abuse of the system?

The last 25 years was only "relative peacetime" to those that werent serving. We churned a generation of warfighters through constant deployments and that took an immense toll on health and wellness. This also included a higher utilization rate for the guard and reserve components.

Some of you act like a military "retirement" is all that great. You gotta have a lot of active duty years and rank to make anything over $3k a month... which is taxable. And again, the VA is compensation... not disability!!!!

But hey... I guess people should just go into politics where you can serve ONE TERM and be set pretty damn good after that.

I work with a veteran and this shite pisses him off. He said he routinely gets shamed by his veteran friends for not gaming the system.

I have a family member who did this. They didn't even spend six months in, not even through AIT. bullshite injury no worse than a bicycle wreck, but played it up into "nerve damage" and "emotional distress". Had rich partner at the time, doctor shopped constantly even outside the VA with physicians they knew. Eventually got full 100% disability within 5 years or so of being discharged and feigning being hurt.

Was a complete scam the whole times far as I could tell (this person never wanted to work to begin with, ever). Got full benefits including VA home loan for a house with just a $5,000 downpayment. We stopped talking a decade ago because it was obviously a grift and caused tension at any gatherings. The house was lost and a divorce happened, but the government checks still roll in.

They used to be too paranoid to even mow the lawn themselves in case an investigator took a picture and they lost the checks.

For those sent to Vietnam, especially those drafted, i am cool with the disability benefits. They went through hell for a pointless war.

However, don’t tell me your agent orange exposure caused your heart disease when you’ve smoked 1-2 pack/day since you were deployed in 68’

Some of you are stating you know veterans who are claiming 100% disability. Do you all have any idea of the millions of people (including myself) who served our country over the years ? I don't and not claiming to. Just because your buddies are crooks doesn't mean the entire system is broken.

Dude literally claimed his alcoholism was a result of his time in the Army and was awarded 100% disability. Ridiculous

No such thing…totally the opposite as being an alcoholic and/or drug addict hurts claims as especially mental since it’s hard for raters to determine if issues stem from substance abuse or precipitor.

It seems if you are 100% disabled you would be incapacitated. I think some of our veterans are scamming the system IMO.
completely

One of the main topics of conversation when around the veterans water cooler is making sure to get your paperwork right and and what ailment justifies what percentage and how to get your maximum amount of percentage from each bruise or eye and ear exam.

You can qualify as a DV just for sleep apnea and needing a CPAP

Another falsehood…SA has to have been diagnosed while in service and recently SA in rated at 0% if CPAP in use.

Living conditions for a deployed service member is often in crappy conditions in crappy countries with every kind of virus, amoeba, microscopic scabie, pulmonary enemy and bacteria you can imagine.

For the folks who did 4 years at Andrews AFB or out in Hawaii and no deployments, or broke a femur in boot camp/AIT and processed out…God bless them.

POGs and REMFs and FOBBITS get crapped on by combat arms folks but they’re our POGS and REMFs and FOBBITS, so civilians who are jealous Shaniqua got PTSD from having to show up to formation at 0630 can just just suck it.
