serious question. If you don't tip at drop off, what happens when the pick up valet is a different guy? Do they split tips or does the drop off guy just get screwed?

Like $2-3, if anything.

the way I see it, they all do both drop offs and pickups, so the money should even out...

Nothing. It's enough of a gift for them that they got to be in a car like mine.

...j/k - Usually about $3 when I drop off and then $3-5 when I pick up.

Always at least a $5 spot, if I'm at a really nice hotel it's $10 and when I check in $10 or $20 to the valet captain if I'm going to be in & out with the vehicle.

Agreed. About $5 per transaction.

But I'd rather self-park and walk. Neither my wife nor I are so pretentious that we need to valet park.

Same with checking in to a hotel. We each have got one bag on wheels, so we don't need a guy with the big cart, but feel like we have to play along sometimes, but it is a total waste of money/manpower.

The amount of money being thrown out is ludicrous to me. I am required to valet in Dallas at many restaurants whether I want to or not. I would happily park myself if given the choice. I typically give $2 when I get my car back...paying $5 on the dropoff and $5 on the pickup is nuts to me.

I think $5 on either the in or the out but not both is the standard. Any extra requests or complications obviously push it up. If I'm a regular somewhere I'll occasionally throw a twenty both ways but that certainly shouldn't be the expectation.. As the great Steve Martin said, "Tipping is pointless. But overtipping is capitalism".

Also, the valet is second only to the trumpet player as a potential weed hookup. Or so I've heard.

$5 is a lot. $2-3 is good. I am a former valet. $5 is a nice gesture. A $20 when you park means I put your car on the curb up front.

Nice to know. Where I live in St Pete, most if not all of the valet parking is free(and parking is a bitch). I usually avoid the valet parking because I figured anything less than $10 was a bitch move.

Can't think of a job I'd hate more than sprinting around in the heat, cold, or rain, for some pompous dick....all for a 2 dollar tip.

They're probably getting 8 or 9 bucks an hour, but when there is the POSSIBILITY of a tip, a shitty one is disheartening.

You don't tip when you are dropping off. You tip when you get it back in one piece.

I've never used a valet, directly. I'm far too cheap to go to a place that would have one. Just basing it off my experience as someone who has lived on tips in the past.

$2 or $3 when you pick it up. Listen to the former valet. Why the frick are people giving away so much money? $5 is crazy unless it's a place that's really nice and the valet has to run a mile to get to the car.

My understanding is they pool tips. At hotels, I tip upfront as well as on pick up though because I don't know when I'll pick up my car every time. Usually give $3 or more there. If I'm constantly coming and going, I'll let them know so they aren't putting my car all the way back in the garage, and I'll give them $1-3 each time I come grab it.

$2-$3 bucks in. $2-$3 bucks out.

Minimum. Sometimes it's more. I don't get my jollies depriving kids of a few bucks.

It depends on how many $1s I have so either $2, $3 or $4 if I have them. If not, I'll give $5 but certainly don't feel the need to unless outstanding service was delivered.

What exactly are you tipping for when you drop off? Because he had the ability to wlak to your car without hurting himself?

If I tip on drop off, a service would have to have been provided to warrant a gratuity. Did he help guests out of the car, open the car doors, make a suggestion about the establishment I am visiting, etc.

Giving someone a tip before they have done anything isn't a tip at all.
