It took 25 years, but late musical icon Selena Quintanilla now has a Texas college course exploring her life and career. Beginning fall 2020, the University of Texas at San Antonio will begin offering Selena: A Mexican American Identity and Experience. The course will employ the pop star's image, use of language, and the media coverage surrounding her career and death to map out the historical trajectory of Tejana/o Mexican-Americans in Texas.

"When I got to UTSA five years ago, I was surprised that someone hadn't already done a class like this," says the course's instructor, Dr. Sonya M. Aleman, associate professor of Mexican American studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

"To me, it makes perfect sense that there would be (a class) where Selena's the springboard to talk about issues of representation, identity, and race and racialization."

How about let’s not fund it with state tax paid money and privatize academia....

Never heard of her until last week when one of her songs came on the "90s summer hits" station on spotify and I looked her up. Having one of those weird moments where something you never knew existed suddenly becomes common place in your life once you learn about it

She was a pretty big deal in Texas and especially those parts so that makes sense for a Mexican American studies curriculum.

J-Lo did a great job portraying her in the movie.

Should be a short lived course. It'll be over before they know it.

University of Tuscaloosa has a course on the “Chicks” (Artists formerly known as the Dixie Chicks) this Fall.

It’s an hour after “Gambling on the ‘Rona 101”

Yes she did.

I'll always think of the scene after she was murdered when I hear "Dreaming of You"

Because they created an elective that you’re not required to spend your money to take if you don’t want to?
