My point is if it's a word that gets someone suspended then it should be a word that can get ANYONE suspended.
I agree there.

And once upon a time when I wasn't pretty much exclusively in office settings, I heard young latin and white sailors (flatbill types) use the word in a setting of perceived camaraderie, and I gave them the same "knock it off" that I've given the black kids--because it's not appropriate. But I never thought of running it up the chain as any kind of "racial" incident.
I agree there.

Arguing that a person can or can't do something simply because of the color of their skin is racist. There is no getting around that.
I just mentioned that I've known white and latin (hell latin kids use it almost as much as black kids now) kids to use it in the bro context, and no one gives a shite. It's not about race, it's about context.
There's a difference even in me making racist jokes with friends of certain ethnicities who know that I'm speaking in jest (and not a racist) and me making the same joke to the exclusion of someone of that ethnicity. The way humans communicate and the way it's perceived is not this big fricking mystery that you're making it out to be. Some of my best friends in college were Jewish, and we gave each other hell. I didn't let up on the "guess we can't count on Bronstein to pick up the check even though his dad is fricking loaded" jokes. If I went into my office tomorrow and said, "so and so in the J3 is one stingy Jew bastard", I'd be standing in front of the man if anyone outside my circle heard me.

Would you rather have priviledge or the ability to say a word?

I'd say that is exactly what the girl was doing though. Wouldn't you? Or do you really think she was specifically talking about black people?

I didn't make the comment about your handle, buddy.
And if a minority of a minority that actually votes on a consistent basis is your definition of "in mass" then sure.

Watching you guys debate this is like watching a bunch of foreigners talk about some relatively obscure, but seemingly easily understandable, facet of American life.
My brain is saying, there's no way it's this difficult to understand. There's no way they don't get it.
But maybe they don't.
I know. Sometimes it seems like there is a stream of posters who have literally just walked out the door of the house for the first time and realized that there are people who look different (the scary "them").
Heck, this stuff was old news when Richard Pryor swore off the use of word. But heck I guess maybe each generation has to do the navel gazing anew.

Maybe you should go back and read my post. I specifically addressed the difference between me including friends of a certain ethnicity in my jokes about them, and me cracking said jokes behind their backs--either because I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so to their faces (because we didn't have that kind of rapport) or because I didn't have/want any friends of said ethnicity. Maybe the distinction seems trivial to you, for reasons surpassing all the understanding that I possess, but it makes a great deal of difference.
And, for the record, I wouldn't suspend some 19yo sorostitute for making racist jokes in private. I wouldn't suspend her for being a racist, a closet racist, or whatever the hell she is. I wouldn't suspend her for having friends stupid enough to not understand that social media is very, very public.
I wouldn't suspend her for anything, in fact.
But I'm not going to sit here and pretend that there isn't a distinction to be drawn.
ETA to your ETA: Yeah. I'd pretty much bet my left hand that she was talking about black people. And I'm ambidextrous, but left-hand dominant.

Is she writing on the dry erase board behind someone's back?
Honestly, the only thing I'm actually arguing in this thread is that the only thing dumber than using that word is claiming that only people of a certain skin color should be able to use it.

Didn't read thread, but if the only thing that sucks about being a white person is not being able to say one word, than frick yea, I do indeed love being white.

Were they there? Were they in on the joke? Were they readily able to observe if not for her idiot friend?
No? Then yes. It was behind the backs of the subjects of her sport.

Oh my Lord....it's not the word! It's the racist intent behind the word. Are y'all trolling or do y'all really not understand this?
Connotations, people. It's simple.

We all agree kids these days are stupid, and freely using that word is stupid, so it makes sense that kids these days of all races uses the word freely. It was only a matter of time. If it really offends you only based on the skin color of the person using it, you're probably a stupid person too.

here we go again, someone who hasn't a clue what black people go through feels like he can be the moral compass on how they should feel about a racial slur towards them. Unbelievably arrogant and zero self awareness when people do that.
You don't know me. I went to a 96 percent black school. I was the only white boy on any sports team. I was in the military and lived with blacks. I've dated a black girl and currently make my living saving black and white people's lives. So just because you sit behind a computer and type tough shite you don't fricking know.me or what I know or don't know.

Did you notice the word ALMOST in my comment??? Guess not.
