When I’m passing by places like Blue Bayou and The Healing Place it gets terribly annoying when they have cops stopping traffic to let people out. I understand that they are off duty and making side money but they’re also using government resources while they’re doing it. Do cops have to reimburse the city/state for using the vehicles and gas while on side duty?

The extra $7 in gas completely cripples the government’s budget

Per the police, it "increases police visibility".

In some ways I agree, but

If they’re off duty do I have to stop when they say stop

Is it enough traffic that it's going to snarl up traffic for everyone or is it just a convenience to the exiting vehicles?

No. The answer is no.

They are still acting in the capacity of law enforcement for the department they work in.

You will sleep easier at night if you stop looking for trivial BS to cry about

No, it’s part of the benefits they receive.

You sure? Private drive and a contracted off duty cop still has ticket jurisdiction?

This. And.... they're doing police work still, just getting paid by a private party rather than with tax dollars. Should actually be happier about this as it is saving from extra spending that could actually be justified by the department if they chose to do this with an on duty officer.

I don't mind this practice but in my annual ethics training it says you can't get paid for the job you already have.

An example given one time was a teacher can't teach after hours for money.

That's not accurate. You can't get paid in exchange for performance the functions of your office. An officer can't charge you money to respond to your house while he's on duty, but he can absolutely charge you to provide a security detail when he's off. Same with a teacher and tutoring.

I think where the confusion/conflict comes into play is that if a teacher is tutoring a lot of his/her own students outside of class, then it would seem to imply that maybe they are doing a poor job teaching in class on purpose...but if it's just a couple students or different students altogether, it is fine.

BB and HPC pay for these services. It’s not free.

The way agencies handle this varies. Some agencies receive a check from the private company. They take $5 an hour out for use of vehicle and fuel then pay out the off duty officer

Other negotiate with the private business and pay a monthly fee to the department to use the vehicle
