My dad had a 2004 XJ and it was absolutely a better, more comfortable, and more reliable than the two Mercedes and Range Rover he's had since.

I thought most Jags used Ford parts... I could be wrong though

Not just no, but hell no.
They are beautiful cars. I bought a '15 XJL Portfolio in Jan. of '16. It was a demo with 4K miles on it - sticker was $87,000 and I got it for $69,000. Thought it was too good of a deal to pass up. Absolutely loved the car at first. Awesome for traveling - lots of room, lots of trunk space, heated massage seats that were great for my bad back on long trips, etc. In the first year the A/C went out and they had to replace the entire control panel/screen. Would have been over $3,000 if not under warranty. Right after I passed the warranty mileage limit, it started going in and out again. However, they could not replicate it whenever I brought it in to the dealer, so I just had to deal with it.
The biggest issue came right after that. One day I noticed that my front and back passenger side carpet was soaking wet. It ended up being a small plastic part that connects to the A/C drain. A non-dealer mechanic told us the part is too close to the transmission and melts, and just a slight warp breaks the seal and water drains into the carpet. Brought it to the dealer, and it was $4,000 to change out this $35 part because they had to remove the dashboard, center console, and seats to replace the part. And of course it's replaced with the same plastic part that will likely melt again in the future. It was just out of warranty due to mileage, but still under age. Of course, for the '16s and newer they added a year to the warranty, but that didn't save me $4,000 in repairs.
This tiny bit of warping on this cheap plastic part literally cost me $4,000.
Never had so much trouble with a new high end car. Or any other car I've owned.
It's a shame, because the car was amazing in every other way.
Traded it in on my new Grand Sport, and I luckily got $28,500 for it from one dealer, while every other dealer wanted to give me $22 for it. They ended up listing it at over $33K, then kept reducing over the next couple months until they finally sold it for a couple grand less than they gave me for it. Over $40K in depreciation in 3 years even though I got it for $19K off sticker. I wanted a Panamera that I could have got for $3K more than the Jag, but the wife wanted the Jag. The Panamera held its value significantly more than the Jag did, so it was a very bad purchase in hindsight.
Run, run away.
ETA: It sucks that they are trash, because the F-type is a fine looking car and I would have considered one over my Vette. I drove a relative's new F-type R and it was badass. But after all the problems with the XJL, no way in hell was I taking a chance on an F-type.

Not a surprise on the AC issues. How's your Grand Sport treating you? Very nice cars.

Absolutely love the Grand Sport. Mine is a '19 in Sebring Orange, and it looks fantastic in the sunlight. Took it to the track recently and it's amazing on the track as well. Had not done a track day in over 4 years, and first time out shaved 3 seconds off my previous best lap time from my last Vette.
However, after looking at this the other day, I'm tempted...

That's great to hear and that's a beautiful car. Friend has one and he has driven the heck out of it without any issues.
I love the new ones as well but I think it might be best to wait another year and get those first year bugs corrected. Like many, I think it's going to be a good car. You in LA?

Yes, in La. Checked out the C8 in Mobile though - not available for sale yet, but a friend has one ordered and we checked out the traveling C8 display at the Mobile dealer. I’d definitely wait before pulling the trigger - after 5 years they never did solve the C7 Z06 overheating issues (which is why I stuck with the Grand Sport), so I would guess the C8 might have a few bugs to work out. Looked nicer in person than what I expected from just seeing photos though. Interior/dash setup was badass.

I had a friend who was in the business of restoring old Jaguars. He bought a Jaguar with a V12 for personal use and could not afford to keep it up even though he had mechanics on his staff.
Are the parts just that expensive? This sounds almost unbelievable

I was wondering how user-friendly the interior would be. Outside looks great.
