How much if that goes to state power grids so we don’t have blackouts constantly when everyone transitions to EV?

It’s a nothing burger at current generation capacity growth. Realistically, EVs do a lot for load control and levelize.

I picture an EV like an oversized smartphone but it requires the same electrical connection as an electric washer/dryer. If we suddenly have a 10% increase in EV ownership, wouldn’t there be a higher demand on the grid?

I’m willing to hear your explanation though.

I’ll preface with that I’m on my iPad and typical complicated responses is difficult and I’m not at a point in the evening to pull out the laptop.

But the simple answer is that growth number is basically impossible to hit over any short term period. But even that, considering demand fluctuations from peak to overnight, isn’t really an issue when you considering the amount frequency and timing of EV charging.

If we moved to level generation, everyone would be happier with less non-productive time. It shifts the demand profile in favor of society. That’s to a point. It can get lopsided but it’s unrealistic.

Your basic 9-5 folks that come home and immediately plug their EV in once they’re done with work.

Maybe I’m in a bubble but the rush hour in my town rolls back in from work around 4-6p and I’m guessing they’re going to plug in once they’re done with errands for the day.

Side note: my neighbor has two EVs; Model Y and an i3 which they’re typically home around 4-5p each evening with both vehicles in the garage on the charger.

But they don’t charge when you plug them in, they delay until overnight unless you override that setting, which basically no one does. Also, they don’t charge every night. My wife charges hers once a week or so. Every 3-5 days is consistent with the data I see.

Plugged in =/= charging.

So you’re saying that they’re programmed to charge during off-peak hours from factory?

We can debate when that ended. It’s probably a fools errand but I contend that the day we used imminent domain to take property for transmission that cat was out of the bag.

Can I just get a light truck powered by a turbo diesel that can haul a bass boat?

Big part of the reason why I’m against high speed rail. I know European countries have some great public transit but no way that it works here.

Think about the children. My son loves fishing. They hate kids.

They keep trying to push that rail between Houston and Dallas. It would be cool to take that train ride at hyper speeds but I can’t see any ROI. Although when I finally do make it to Japan, I’m getting on that bitch.

I’ve done the Italy one and it’s pretty sweet. I like the concept of a Texas triangle, but as someone who’s married to a Texas rancher and deals with this pretty regularly I can not support anything that takes land from private land owners. It’s just bullshite. We’ve already gone too far.
