Never used punch cards or 8". My earliest foray was 5" floppies in BASIC on an Apple II

This is a good thing, not a bad thing. Who now days would be able to find equipment to read those disks if they wanted to?

Give me $1 billion and I would be happy to consult the gov't into modern IT infrastructure.

That is scary as hell.

Why? A modern day PC can't even visit most independent art film streaming sites without becoming completely useless.

I'd trust the 8" disk more than anything that comes out today.

I have zero issues with this. As a matter of fact, I have several legacy drives including 8" that I maintain information on for security. The always-on, constantly connected world renders all hardware and software security moot provided sufficient access and time.

Does anyone really think that Russia, France, the U.K., China, etc. have better technology? Everyone freaks out about this type of technology in the US military but we spend as much as the rest of the world combined, it's not Putin has an App on his phone to fire a nuke.

easy to boast. however i bet when you get into the labyrinth world of the US nuke system you would run screaming for the hills.

even if i did this work for a living i'd pass on this gig.

Well no shite

What I'm saying is that there aren't necessarily cost worthy uses for upgrading a segregated system

I'm curious if they are actually needing to spend that money on maintenance, or if it is just government money laundering for other operations where the ledger shows $500 for a floppy disk and $1000 for a mouse.

Wouldn't using this out of date technology make it less likely to be hacked? Do we really want the nuke program hooked up to the cloud?

No, because "the cloud" would be full in a week's time, then they'd want to charge a huge monthly fee for "more storage"

This has nothing to do with reliability or security by obscurity and everything to do with the fact that the government truly sucks when it comes to funding maintenance and updates to programs. Blame congress, who is always more interested in shiny new shite.

If that were true, then why haven't they upgraded then? You're post is contradictally incorrect
