You're thinking of the A-10 as the GOAT aircraft.

The EOD guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The MOAB is dropped by a C-130, which is far from fast.

Nope, I work/worked both. The AC-130W is the meanest killing machine I've been around. Obviously the AC-130J will top it, but both are incredible.

It would be more exciting to drop one of these

We made some low yield nukes back in the day, only like 300 ton yield. Uranium hyride or something like that.

I'm confused. The CNN article says that this was dropped from an MC-130. I also remember the video of the test back in the early 2000s where they dropped it from the back of a Herc.

If it is designed to be dropped from a bomber, are they making modifications to drop it from a Herc, or are they just putting it on a dolly and sliding it out?

People are mixing things up. The bomb dropped in Afghanistan is the GBU-43/B Mother of all Bombs (MOAB). It is a fuel-air bomb that's main effect is blast. It weighs 23,000 lbs, but detonates on contact.

The weapon designed for the bomber is the GBU-57/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). It weighs 30,000 lbs, but only has about 5,000 lbs of explosives. The rest is an extremely hardened case so that it can penetrate hardened, deeply buried targets.

Two completely different weapons, designed for drastically different target sets.

What's the difference other than a W or J in the name?

Pretty sure that's not a MOAB. Just looks like a 2,000 lb weapon to me.

The W-model is a legacy version of the -130. The J-model is the newest version. It flies faster, higher and farther.

The J and W models will have very similar if not nearly the exact same weapons packages on them from what I understand.
