I am road tripping to Big Bend this June and plan on taking Hwy 90 in San Antonio and going west towards Hwy 385 in Marathon TX.

Is this route safe? Ample gas stations? All I can think of is The Hills Have Eyes. This makes for an interesting experience. TIA

Not sure what you mean, but you aren't driving through old Mexico. It's as safe as hwy 90 in south Louisiana.

Stop at Devil's River scenic area (near Del Rio) if you have time. A hidden gem.

Is this how you imagine Hwy 90 west of SA?

Get a cocktail at the Gage Hotel in Marathon.

Just in general, be prepared to stop at 1 border patrol station on the way there and 2 on the way out of Big Bend.

Don't speed thru every small town. They are hell on out of state travelers.

People must think that south of I-10 in Texas there's just illegals running amok with AKs and bags of cocaine strapped to their backs

Very. I've been that way many times.

Yep.

Some of the nicest people I've ever met out that way.

I usually stay on the west side (Alpine usually) and only once in Marathon.

Be ready for the gestapo errrrr I mean immigration check points. If they are feeling pissy (pretty much every day) they will have a mutt or 2 all over your vehicle while grilling you about your trip, destination, baggage. Bunch of large scale assholes. Make you pull your bags out,the whole nine yards. Saw them put the guy in front of me in cuffs for DARING to have his phone out and filming.

bullshite. I've rolled through them with a utility trailer full of ice chests and they didn't give me shite about it. And I've never seen anything crazy at all. Hell, there's not even much of a line in those little checkpoints out there.

Have never heard of or seen this either. You must be lucky. Sounds like the guy in front of you was an a-hole.

Wasn't being a dick. Guy had his phone out and this fat neck grabs him and cuffs him. Seriously man, The old lady and I were shocked. This was in 2011.

It's fine but I prefer straight out I-10

You're taking the scenic route. How many days? Where you staying?

That's bullshite

You'll roll down your window and they'll say "are you a US citizen" you say yes and they say " move along"

I do it every couple of weeks and I have NEVER seen anyone asked to pull to the side
