Have you been to southwest Houston?

Sharpstown, specifically (unless it's been cleaned up in the last 4 years since I lived in Katy)

There are some sketchy spots off 59 between 610 and the beltway, but most think of Stafford / Sugarland when thinking of SW houston these days and those are now affluent areas
Southeast and east is where it's scary to drive at night and where the tennis shoes hang from the power lines

In many years of traveling that route, I only had one problem. We left Baton Rouge one afternoon and planned to drive all night to BBNP. We stopped in Del Rio at an all night convenience store at 2:00 AM. My friends were still shopping. I was paying for my stuff at the counter, and the clerk warned me that he overheard some locals kids who came in after us talking about robbing us outside. I thanked him and went outside. I made sure they knew we weren't unarmed when they came out, and everyone went their merry way.

Del RIo is probably no worse than most towns, anywhere. Just use common sense. I've passed through many times since without a hitch. Next time I go to Big Bend I may take 90 west from San Antonio for old times sake. I like the sign in Hondo that says " This is Gods country. Don't drive like hell through it."

June is a hot month, so bring plenty of water when you camp.
Enjoy your trip. It's nice out there.
