I think UPS uses their own controllers

They do not. SDF is a public use airport with everything from cargo, to passenger, to GA.

Seeing some pictures on social media now. Looks like the jet tore a big gash out of one of the UPS warehouses. The area it went down in looked really close to some homes, but I cannot think of where. The airport is bordered by UofL, the Fairgrounds, CSX and all the industry on Grade lane and Fern valley.

Credit to the pilots. Given the engine loss, the plane looked level and controlled before it lost its battle with gravity.

Good call

Video shows front of wing on fire. If engine pylon attach points give the engine on the UPS plane most likely did the same thing....detached and thrust propelled it up and over the wing tearing the front of the wing and starting a fire in the damaged area. As big as the flames were it most likely tore open part of the left wing fuel tanks and immediately became uncontrollable.

Prayers to all those poor souls affected by this tragedy

Extremely sad for those killed and their families.

UPS corporate has to be shitting themselves with this occurring at Worldport right before peak season.

That cabin still being intact just made my stomach drop. I was hoping for the crew’s sake that it was more “instant”.

What instantly came to mind when I watched. This was the worst case scenario for those poor souls.

Making a bad situation worse, it apparently made direct impact on GFL environmental, lots of waste storage tanks there I believe

They were probably working so hard to control it they didnt have time for anything but a momentary "oh shite."

There's nothing you can do when an engine rips off. Engine failure is bad but survivable. But engine ripoff is catastrophic. Plane loses structural integrity and aerodynamics and is basically a missle at that point. We'll probably never know but I like to think those pilots were just trying to steer it into an open parking lot at that point to prevent ground casualties.

With no air traffic controllers to guide the planes, what could go wrong?
