I'm just glad I was able to kill a few hours at work.

Just came here to thank you for this guide
... (long read)
First car we purchased in 2013 (new Rav 4), I let the dealership dictate a lot, and when we got in the finance office I basically said just get the note to where I want it, whatever you have to do. Spent 4 hours there during the negotiating process. I now realize the mistakes I made there.
This time when looking for a new 4Runner I was more stern, and worked the internet more. Got out-the-door prices from a dozen or so dealers from the Gulf Coast to Houston. Would have preferred to buy closer to home, but would travel if needed. Some wouldn't play the game and wanted me to offer a price first. I told them that's not fair to them or any other dealer. Give me YOUR BEST price.
Negotiating via internet saved a TON of time. I narrowed it down to 3 dealers and went for a test drive at the first one.
When we began discussing price, I said others are lower and got them to come down. Vehicle on site wasn't my first color choice and I let them know that. They said they'd work to move a first choice color to them and get back to me.
I took the new low price to the Dealer #2, and said theirs wasn't good enough and started to head toward the doors (I had my hand on the door handle). Turns out I was talking to the sales manager (HUGE advantage here as there's no waiting to hear back--learn the name of this guy at each place). He immediately made a new offer that bested all others, along with another offer on a similar vehicle. I thanked him and said I'd be in touch. He asked if I did end up purchasing from him, could we do it before the end of the month? At that point I knew I was going to be getting a deal.
Dealer #3 was a bust from the get-go, didn't even have the car he offered on site. Told me if someone's better, they're losing money. Replied that's not my problem.
Next, I gave Dealer #1 another chance to beat the best price, and told him I'd await his e-mail reply.
I waited a couple of days and told Dealer #2 I was coming in for a test drive. Test drove, got a new out the door price even lower than his initial best price and agreed to a deal.
Met with finance, refused the extended warranty, and was in-and-out in less than two hours with a vehicle and a price I was extremely pleased with. Couldn't have gone better.

Does anybody know of a website that allows you to email multiple dealership at once?

What configuration, MSRP, and purchase price?
I’m in the market for an OR Premium. Most places around here advertise $1500-$2000 off sticker, but inventory is very limited.

That's awesome. Good job.
With that said, it is nuts that getting a decent price on a new vehicle requires this much work. I mean, damn.

Agreed...but it beats the alternative of sitting in dealerships all day long waiting on someone to give you a fair price.

I'm looking to buy a new F-150 and have emailed/messaged several dealerships to see what they can offer. One dealer pointed out that my parents' address has a $3,000 "private offer" discount available to them. How can I take advantage of this? Do I have to change my license address to their address to register it there?
Also, this "private offer" comes straight from Ford Motor Co., right? So I shouldn't allow the dealer to negotiate while including that in the price ?
What % less than MSRP should I aim for in negotiating for new F-150s (XLT, 4WD, 302a package) these days?

Great tips and information. As with most things, the ability to swallow pride and walk out the door is key.

That's not swallowing pride. That's having pride.
Just a heads up guys, Neighbors should have a pretty good promo rate coming out soon. Got under 4 on a side by side a few weeks ago. That hasn't happened since the economy was shitty.

How much do big-time dealerships mark up used cars? e.g. a 2016 highlander with 50K miles for 27K. What is that dealership’s markup vs cost?
Posted on 7/22/19 at 7:44 pm to clarencegreenthumb
Will cover, nor anyone but the dealership know how much they have invested in a used car. But I have a 2016 highlander for sale, 31k miles, i own it for $28k and selling for $28k

Most goobers pride would cause them to "buy a bad deal" just to not seem like a schmuck.

Bump
Any of y’all purchase a expedition lately? The lady has the envie for one so we started looking around. They’re knocking 15k off MSRP right now. Would y’all consider that a good deal on those buses?
What have vehicle interest rates been like?

Thanks for posting/updating. Number 10 is not my experience, in every case it had paid off for me
Issues with engines transmissions and other drivetrain parts were once what resulted in expensive repair bills, today that s rare, but now cars are loaded with electronics and owner equipment that seems to be failure prone nd very expensive to repair. Over several vehicles I have had to replace two back up cameras, a radio/ navy unit, powered drivers seat, side mirror sensor unit, fortunately all covered by warranty.

Will, Can we get a post-covidian update on this? With vehicle shortages and the inflated price of ore-owned vehicles, there has to be some changes.
