Typically a paper trail will follow transportation. Any idea which company hauled it? They could look at the pick up location (info you have) and possibly trace it from there.

What about Car Fax? Type in ViN and it may show something.

All those shops that specialize in certain things know the others who do the same. Calling one shop wil probably get you info on 5 more places to call if the first doesn’t have it.

Check his cell phone history and keep the number active. Talk to any car pals he had- don’t let them know you don’t know where the car is- instead ask where he liked to get it serviced so you can get it looked at. Check his credit card receipts from times you remember it being worked on.

Look at his browser bookmarks for MG shops/MG forums/MG message boards. May find a clue there.

Texas requires paperwork on all tows if the tow company is registered with the state, meaning they're not one of those "not for hire" "tow companies". VIN is all you need to find out from the state police. Usually, the "last 8" is all you need. Good luck finding your Pop's car.

Check to see if he ever wrote a check to a repair place in Houston - old car guys typically use the same repair place.

If he sent it somewhere and they performed a repair then it would show up on CarFax. You would need the VIN though.

This is not true. Only dealership and (some) insurance records show up on carfax.

It may also help in your search if you are sure of the year and type...I believe the following (from what I remember), is true...

The MGA was produced until 1962.
The MGB began production in 1963.

Incorrect. Every time you have your vehicle serviced at a mechanic or body shop, or take it in for brake tag, it goes in the system. Even if you take your vehicle to a 5 Minute Oil Change it comes up on the CarFax.

Wrong.

The only thing shows up on my Carfax for my truck is when I brought it to the dealership. Nothing else besides dealerships shows up on mine. Not even when I had it inspected.

Only if the shop volunteers to give up this data to CarFax.

ummmm, your wrong. I'll give you a list of 50 VIN numbers that won't show up on a Carfax. What motivation do I, as an independent automotive repair facility, have to report my customers repairs to Carfax? Also, how would I report those repairs if I wanted to?

I've run Carfaxes on customers' vehicles under warranty investigation to find out if they've been in another wreck/shop since our repair and if I owe (under the terms of my lifetime warranty) for work I've performed. Hardly ever does my work show up.

Once, a $15k repair to a Tundra that had some paint issues (after 8 years) came back. The Carfax came back clean. The wreck I repaired for State Farm wasn't even on there. I found all the oil changes they'd done at the Toyota place though.
