Update in OP - Serious question - my dad has melanoma. Where to get treatment

My dad just had a malignant melanoma removed. The dermatologist is going to go back and remove a larger area. It does not sound like he's going to be doing a full Moh's procedure though. I don't think this dermatologist is aggressive enough. Where is a good place or doctor in Baton Rouge, Houston, or New Orleans for treatment of melanoma? Is MD Anderson the best answer?
TIA
ETA - my dad will see Dr Lyons next week.

why did I think that you are a physician?

Dr Bienvenue at Mary Bird is the finest oncologist I know.
ETA: I typically don't care about a downvote, but there is a particular person who downvotes any mention of this doctor.
I'd love to know why.

Lots of places can adequately do a MOHS procedure without you having to come to Houston.
Usually, but it's not always necessary depending on the cancer. You (a doc) know how contracts and reimbursement work. Well, MDACC has better contracts than anyone, and there is still patient responsibility attached to that. They are the best, but you pay for the best. And the best isn't always needed.
And I say this as a former employee.

The wife and I traded. She went to MDACC and I went to private practice.

I would think you would definitely want Mhos, having real time pathology to determine clear margins would seem like something essential with melanoma. Chad Prather in BR can do it, and there is another Mohs specialist at Mary Bird Perkins. I am not a doc, but I also question the actions of your Dads dermatologist.

MD Anderson. Dr. Michael Migden.

What is the size of the melanoma? I can't see how melanoma would be removed by just a dermatologist. I had what a what was considered to be very small, very early stage melanoma removed 7 years ago. Dr. Johnson in Metairie did the surgery at East Jefferson. My dermatologist took a "cookie cutter" sample to verify it was melanoma but he did not even suggest to remove it himself. A week later I had it surgically removed.

Location and staging dictate if mohs is appropriate? How deep and where is the lesion?

MOHS surgery can be miserable. I've had 3 on my face, and they suck. But they are a simple procedure that can be done by any number of docs in NOLA or BR, if it is actually needed. Keith LeBlanc is good, on Metairie Rd. But it sounds like, for peace of mind at least, your dad should just get a second opinion from another dermatologist to see if he needs MOHS. MD Anderson is overkill.

Aren't you a doctor? Would think you have better medical resources than the OT lounge...

Treatment for melanoma depends on depth of invasion. If it's a superficial cancer, removal with generous margins may be the only treatment necessary.

I went to Dr. Dupont in Baton Rouge for my melanoma. It was staged and then cut out. Also lymph nodes biopsied and pet scan and bone scan done. 12 years later and I am all good. He is a surgical oncologist thru Baton Rouge General. He has also done the same surgery on a friends of mines husband. Good luck. Very scary stuff.

If it's a melanoma and he's in Louisiana, get him to MD Anderson in Houston. ASAP.
ETA: Good luck to your dad and your entire family. Cancer is scary and tough. I know firsthand.
