They'll end up doing a prisoner swap. Lesson here is play stupid games in foreign countries, win stupid prizes.

If she wasn’t a WNBA player would we even know about this?

that's awesome! my money is still on that there will be an announcement coming shortly that she's being released for "humanitarian" reasons and being returned to her beloved US

Very few of us knew about the plight of teacher Marc Fogel before this and his family raised the issue that he’d be sentenced to 13 years for the exact same crime, so clearly the answer isn’t just the WNBA but also race.

No it’s not. If Tom Brady were stuck in Russia, it would be the same thing. Celebrities & athletes get that kind of privilege regardless of race.

Griner is a celebrity? 99% of Americans had never heard of her before this. Ninety nine percent of Americans probably can’t name another WNBA player.

She’s an athlete and because of that she has a much larger platform than any average Joe, even if you have no clue who she is.

That's part of traveling to different countries - you're subject to their laws - American law means nothing in Russia.

She wasn't just "traveling to another country". She lived and worked there for years. She knew, or should have known, the laws.

I don't like her, but her punishment seems way too harsh for the crime she committed. With that said, I really hope she doesn't get to jump to the front of the line to get released over other foreign prisoners who've been there longer for similar crimes.

A lesson to be learned, when living and working in other countries, double-check and triple-check you are aware of their laws. For many countries outside of the U.S., if you break the law, your arse is grass.
