Is that partially because of the forward speed? Seems around 55mph.

That's not all that crazy in these early spring severe events. Lower instability since it is at night probably had more to do with it. It also looked like the circulation almost split into two. Something low level shorted out the process it seems.

Yeah I figured speed is a symptom and not really a cause, per se, but it’s hard to ignore sometimes.

There's been a quasi front from all the rain to the north hanging around all day. The long tracks have been rooting in that boundary and you enhance that low level inflow and spin.

At least that's what it has looked like to me today.

Yea, there was some kind of prefrontal trough or other mid-level feature that focused convection a bit farther east with the warm front bounding the northern edge. Also, the surface low was weaker than the models showed, this kept things from cranking up in the northern and northwestern portions of the early day MOD/High area. Even with those limiting factors, the overall setup was still more conducive to long track tornadoes than last week and that was realized, unfortunately, in some areas of Alabama.

Damn. We live about 50-60 miles East-northeast of Roanoke. Just as we were turning in for bed.

Evidently, a husband and wife pair of "chasers" got in a tight spot near Greensboro earlier today and had their car nearly flipped and windows blown out. Oh....they had their baby with them.

Debris signature seems to be fading and velocity is broadening again. That damn thing spins up and down within frames.

Eta- maybe not.

Is it where Alabama is situated in relation to the jet stream and proximity to Gulf of Mexico? Why so many tornadoes?
