Update: What year GM 1500 trucks to avoid due to either engine or transmission issues?

FIL realizes cant afford a new truck. He's retired. Looking at purchasing a used GMC Sierra. His older one is a 2009 model. I know GM has had issues with their 8 and 10 speed transmissions. What year's are to be avoided? I can't get him to go 5.7 L Tundra.
Update: He's now looking at 2023 Nissan Titan 5.6L RWD. Told him bout all the GM issues mentioned here. He wants a rwd true 8 cyl truck. Told him Titans are being phased out and should be a solid truck with all issues being worked out now by their final 2024. models

I wouldn’t buy a Chevy from 14-19. And probably not any from 19 forward either.

It's the AFM active fuel management system.
around 2005 or 07 to now. avoid them. I have one and love it but I replaced the lifters and put a range device on mine to keep 8 cylinder on all the time.

Don't do it to yourself unless you budget in a top end to remove AFM and a new Transmission. Could get a 01-04 and take the money to do a overhaul due to the age.

Don’t get a ‘14 or ‘15 for sure.
I had a ‘17 and the 5.3 Eco crap motor. It was reliable but gutless. Had tons of issues with the infotainment system.
If he gets anything used get one with 6.0 and avoid the 5.3. Avoid the ‘20-‘’24 models they have lifter issues.
I think 2018 might be the only one that is less shitty.

My 2020 had the torque convertor replaced around 15,000 miles for a shuddering issue. Now at 32,000, it is starting to shudder again.
Just recently had the fuel pump control module replaced. I would trade the thing in except in 21, a freakin female cop listed a minor wreck as major damage on the police report and I never noticed.

I have a 97 1500. I did have to replace the transmission at approx 94k. I have 240k on the truck now and other than maintenance it's been a workhorse. 3 inch lift baw!

I have a 2020 with 70k miles. It's been a great truck 98% of the time.
Have had some minor issues with it starting on occasion but you give it a few minutes and then it's fine. Code always says some type of fuel pump issue.

If he's not having problems with the 09' I'd just keep it. They don't make trucks like they use to. More tech, more problems.

I have a 2011 Silverado with 165,000 miles. No issues with engine or transmission. I also take care of it. Change oil on time, don't put things off. If a issue pops up I take care of it quickly. I know some vehicles have issues but I think if you stay on top of things then you will avoid most problems.

I have a 2013 Silverado and haven’t had any problems, knock on wood. Shade over 150,000 miles on it.

I have a 2019. Had a transmission stuttering issue. Brought it in under warranty. They changed the tranmy fluid and no more issues.
The only issue I have is the radio locks up on very rare occasion when hot. It's annoying. Have to use the steering wheel radio controls. It works again the next time I start the truck.
