Final phase of I-269 opens, allowing trucks to bypass Memphis traffic

The final phase of Interstate 269, a 60-mile half-loop connecting Interstate 55 and Interstate 40, opened in DeSoto County, Mississippi late last week. The project is expected to allow for easier freight movement in the area, especially for trucks moving eastbound from northern Mississippi.

The half-loop runs from Hernando, Mississippi to Millington, Tennessee, allowing travelers to bypass Memphis, Tennessee and the traffic congestion that often accompanies it. The $640 million project started in 2011, according to Mississippi Department of Transportation.

“We are very excited about it. We are looking forward to our eastbound freight coming out of Mississippi going toward the Carolinas, Nashville and Knoxville being able to bypass the congestion in Memphis where I-40 and I-55 meet,” Graham Trucking Director of Recruiting and Sales Terry Jobe said. “We feel like we’re going to save about an hour of transit time each way getting to our eastbound locations. Of course that’s huge for drivers. It’s a driver’s dream in North Mississippi with all the congestion from the casinos over in Tunica County and the Memphis proper traffic.”

Very interested in comparing/contrasting where these two metros are in about 10-20 years. One of them seems to be preparing for the future. The other can’t even get a canal built.

That’s a bypass in addition to a loop.

Had the loop forever.

For being a bunch of backwards hicks, it's amazing how Mississippi has beaten Louisiana to the punch for casino gambling, sports betting, automobile manufacturing and road construction.

Memphis is a larger metro area by any measure, so even if Baton Rouge had competent planning, Memphis would have the larger and presumably better interstate system.

But Baton Rouge hasn't ever had competent planning.

Well no because there are valuable sugar cane fields and pastures that they don't want to disrupt. And then the owners can turn around and add insult to injury and sell that same property that critically needed infrastructure should be on, and throw up gobs of snap on DSLD built neighborhoods to further congest our roads.

There has been a NEED to be able to bypass Memphis for a long time, like forever. What a shithole!

Baton Rouge has competent planners. They just have shitty politicians that are unwilling to make long-term decisions that may affect them in the next election. The decisions are tough, but they must be made. Louisiana lacks the balls to make a decision. Part of the reason we left.

I’m becoming of the opinion that Mississippi is possibly the best state in the Deep South. Louisiana continues to frick shite up, Alabama is a serious disappointment, Georgia has Atlanta, etc

People that feel like they have to call others bad names to feel better about themselves are often left behind. Nothing new here.

This, to the tenth degree. Career politicians who are corrupt.
