Yea because it's not like some schools or entire school systems inflate their grades.

Yes, this also allows California to hide that problem.

It will further damage their university system though. That’s the price.

Universities will admit even more unqualified students, and universities will drop standards even lower, to ensure these students can graduate.

I just read an article that said teacher recommendations and high school gpa are better indicators than test scores. When all the applicants have 4.0 gaps and a teacher recommendation, theyll be back to needing a standardized test to determine which of the 100k applicant get the 5k available seats.

The ACT and SAT are just intelligence tests that discriminate against the less intelligent making it harder for them to get into good colleges.

. I can't imagine those classes can give a person more than 2-3 point increase as there isn't a way to actually study for tests like the ACT

I saw a pretty big increase. They basically teach you what you said and to move on from questions quickly if you don't know it. How to elimite answers.

But I did well at math the first go around I just focused hard on the English the next go around and LSU took my cumulative score on the SAT.

California still smokes Louisiana in every way imaginable.

Louisiana, America's a-hole, having the audacity to try and talk shite about any other state or region makes me laugh so hard it hurts.

No doubt some brain dead idiot will make a comment about SF and turds, without acknowledging the basic fact that New Orleans is exponentially more nasty than the worst part of California will ever be

I did too. Went from a 25 to a 32. When I took it the first time I had no idea what type of questions to expect or how to manage my time correctly. The prep course I took showed me the different question patterns, introduced some quick mental math tips, and gave advice on how to manage my time.

Of course the ACT/SAT has some flaws. It can skew unfairly towards the people who can afford tutors and take the test 5-6 times. But as of now it is one of the best ways to compare students from different schools to each other. GPA alone can do a very poor job of that. A 3.5 from Catholic/St. Joseph/Episcopal should be worth a hell of a lot more than a 4.0 from Glenn Oaks, Belaire, or Tara.

That makes sense to a degree. The SAT doesn’t tell you anything about a students work ethic, and even the smartest student needs good habits to succeed.

Fair

How on earth do they do their initial sort? By gpa, and race?

This is already happening. Grade inflation has been a thing for quite a while now.

But now instead of objective metrics like standardized testing scores, they can focus on "well rounded" applicants...and by well rounded I mean "check the correct socioeconomic and diversity boxes."

The US university system ceased being about education a good 20 or more years ago.

I think it goes back to our efforts to make university accessible to everyone. Traditionally, a small fraction of Americans attended, perhaps 10%.

Then it was about education - now it’s equal parts job training, and social proof. It’s a way to show that you’re middle class, or upper middle class.
