This is something I've never understood about airlines (or really any other business that operates this way): if you've just fricked up badly enough that you have to compensate me for it, what makes you think I'd want to give you any more of my business?

You serious Clark?

Yes United fricked up by boarding the plane, THEN bumping passengers after the plane was already boarded. But the whole incident escalated because ole doc refused to comply with United's crews attempts to remove him. So airport security was called in and he started flailing around and resisting them too. You can't start fighting with LEO or security at an airport....especially not ON the plane. That's the fastest way to end up face down in cuffs.

I hope something like this comes to LSU season ticketing. The line to get to your seat would get a lot more interesting.

That's where United messed up. They should have upped the offer. You know used the same principles of the best economical system in history, rather than resorting to force.

It's like a micro example of why Communism is so much worse than Capitalism.

Serious question, do you think people with a valid lease have a right to stay on a certain property? That a contract can enable a person to certain legal privileges?

Pretty sure he didn't lease the plane, and he didn't have squatter's rights.

Does that mean an airline can ignore the contract it made with it's passenger?

I'm sure you'd agree that airlines should honor their agreements.

There is an entire contract that details all the reasons it is revocable. We are not sure that it was revoked for any reasons in that contract.

He did have a contract to his seat and for the airline to transport him, though, no?

And United's actions are the only reason it got to that point. And quickly resorting to calling the police, is on them too.

You're being ridiculous.

I'm confused as to if the plane was actually overbooked, or UA didn't realize til last minute that 4 flight attendants needed a ride.

I don't know if flight attendants have to pay for a ticket, I'm assuming they dont. But if UA never over sold the flight, then it could get even more ugly for UA.

Its no different from when you order something online, and then they send you an email that it is out of stock

Actually its like reserving an item, waiting a couple months, driving to the store when it arrives. Checking in through security, having it at the checkout counter. Then being told you can't have it because its the last one and the cashier actually like really needs it and they didn't think about that until now.

Not if United violated the contract, then both of their actions brought us where we are today.

United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said Tuesday that all 70 seats on United Express Flight 3411 were filled, but the plane was not overbooked as the airline previously reported. Instead, United and regional affiliate Republic Airlines, which operated the flight, selected four passengers to be removed to accommodate crew members needed in Louisville the next day.

That has nothing to do with how he handled the situation. You're normally more level headed than this.

United actions have nothing to do with him escalating the situation. He had direct control over how he chose to handle the situation. If you really want to play that game, everyone on the planet is partially responsible.

UA has said that it was full but not overbooked, so it's likely the latter.

I don't have time to look at the language, but I highly doubt thqt the lawyers for the airlines haven't written their agreement totally in favor of the airline being able to revoke that agreement. It is NOT a "contract". Purchase agreement, at best.

Yes, in which case all you'd be owed is your refund.

But you're assigning 100% of the blame to him.

Again, we don't know for certain the exact rule/law/policy, there's a gray area. But if you assume for 1 second that UA had no authority to do what they did(which is certainly plausible) then you can't possibly say that UA shares zero responsibility for what happened.
