then the situation can be beneficial to both sides.

The only non antagonistic unions are trade unions, where guys are hired out of the union hall. Construction, mainly. They get training and benefits through the union.

Those still serve some purpose, though the model should be replaced at some point.

I’m not understanding the problem....when you pay union dues, you’re paying for nothing, so that’s what you get. Is this a surprise to anyone

Well you are paying for something.. You're paying for reps and union bosses to get rich as frick.

What does this even mean? The "worth" of a skill set is entirely subjective and determined by the person hiring AND how desperate they are to have said skilled person.

Unions are a cancer in the American work force. Thank goodness their ranks have dropped like a rock. Our non-union manufacturing plants in my company were way way better and much more efficient than the lazy azz whiney union plants.

Is it possible to disband a union once it gets a foothold?

Yes

But most unions are monopolies.

They could get rid of the national union (USW) and go back to being a local group. I suspect that this is what will eventually happen since USW did not give their members an opportunity to vote on the company’s proposal. There is a process which allows this to happen.

You definitely need local representation if you want to be in a union.

The national unions are clueless about regional differences.
