I don't really give a shite about having tall buildings, but the US is definitively behind when it comes to creative architecture in mid-high rise buildings.
thank you...someone gets it.

this is obviously a troll thread because you admit at the end it is American designed.
I'll bite anyway. Americans still lead the world in design. That is why they hire Americans to do the design.
American's aren't going to spend for this type of architecture any time soon because it is pointless and doesn't accomplish anything. Americans value ROI.

The Ultima Tower is proposed by an American. Just thought I'd throw that up that while we're placing pictures of imaginary buildings.

yes designed by Americans...but the current geo-political structure makes it impossible for us to have nice things. We have a third of the worlds billionaires...yet...

i've seen that one before...

While One WTC is not winning any beauty contest, it will look better once all of the buildings around it are complete.

Do you know how many building designs were proposed in Dubai at one point? They're not being built because Dubai is an absolute sinkhole for money.
Just because something has been proposed in another country, doesn't mean we're behind. It means we have no need for outlandish designs and heights.
And the symbolic significance of the Freedom Tower is that it is 1776 feet tall, which I think is pretty awesome.

Saudi Arabia is building a 3,280' high rise city building. America for years has been falling behind.
quote:Wait. So the only measure of architecture is how tall your tallest building is? And America, who is "falling behind" in architecture, is designing the same buildings you're glorifying?. . . Does not compute.
Should be noted that a Chicago firm designed the behemoth.

probably a dumb question...
how do you get steel and building materials that high up?

I wouldn't go to the top floor in that second picture building if you paid me.

We could start a separate thread on the idiotic things built in Dubai.

Crane... basically you build up and use the building itself as a growing crane platform to keep on building up.

That looks like a gigantic butt plug.

You might not be basing your thread just on the height of buildings, but I did find it interesting that the New World Trade is the second tallest building in NYC (if you measure by occupiable floor and not by that stupid spire). The tallest by that measure is the new 432 Park Ave Apartment Building.

From a human-scaled/actual livability standpoint, this doesn't strike me as all that attractive of a place.
