I honestly don’t remember ever eating Uncle Ben’s Rice, but still not mad though.
I use the microwavable flavored rice as sides for weeknight dinners all the time. The butter garlic one is my favorite.

What's the deal with Uncle Ben, I thought Uncle Tom was the issue.

When I worked at Kroger in college 10 years ago me and this black guy I worked with would always talk shite about the people who bought uncle bens rice. Make up racist shite they did and give each other disapproving looks when it was scanned. It was all a joke at the time. Never thought it would actually be made into an issue.

Very nostalgic post. I ate this in the dorms all the time.

The word “Uncle” was once used to describe elderly submissive slaves.
As well as, y’know, uncles
In no way is it a racial term

This is nothing new, canned Mississippi oysters changed names in the 50s.

I did not realized all of these years that I was calling my Uncle Jim a derogatory name.

The Irish should protest Lucky Charms and say that it is a hurtful cultural appropriation on a breakfast cereal...... but they won’t.

Just change it to Uncle Benis and be done with it.

What? Seriously? You didn’t know uncle is used in place of Mr. because people were unwilling to show certain people respect of being called Mr.? If nothing else, at least a history lesson is being learned. It has since evolved to a manor of great respect in the south and among Italians to refer to close friends of the family as uncle when there is no kin relationship.
