quote:

hey all received a letter recently from John Ellison, dean of students, which went beyond the usual platitudes of such letters and made several points about what he called one of Chicago's "defining characteristics," which he said was "our commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression." Ellison said civility and respect are "vital to all of us," and people should never be harassed. But he added, "You will find that we expect members of our community to be engaged in rigorous debate, discussion and even disagreement. At times this may challenge you and even cause discomfort."

To that end, he wrote, "Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called trigger warnings, we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial and we do not condone the creation of intellectual safe spaces where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own."

Thats exactly what college should be. A place where you go to learn, broaden your horizons, branch out from your small little corner of the world. Have people challenge your thoughts, and you challenge theirs. Change yourself for the better as you learn and come across new things. Not safe spaces and protests.

I just like it because this isn't some little school in the middle of nowhere. It is the freakin' U of Chicago.

I figure that we start to see a bit more of things like this from university administrations. It is like that video from Ohio State where the admin guy told those students doing a "sit-in" in the administration building that they were going to be removed if they didn't leave voluntarily.

Really dig this guy taking a stand like this. As others have said; college is the breeding ground for this type of knowledge gathering beyond what you've been exposed to thus far. It will challenge you and your beliefs; you may disagree, but it should require you to think critically and logically about other points of view and various different information.

Ohio State and the University of Chicago are setting the standard for how these situations should be handled. Way to go, Chicago!

Well played Chicago. You and Ohio State both get big bumps in respect from me, for whatever the hell that's worth (which I suspect is nothing).

Here comes mizzoukills to defend Missouri in 3....2.....1.....

What's really sad is that this policy, which should be obvious and non-controversial, actually has to be spelled out to entering students.

Props to this school. This is exactly what an institution of higher learning should be.

It is not a daycare.

Good for them. I was pleased to see OSU's handling of their situation as well.

I suppose when a university is confident enough in it's academic reputation and prowess, they have no problem telling these kids to F off.

They built that reputation doing things THEIR way, not the snowflakes' way.

Kudos to this guy.

I'll be sad when he is forced to apologize and resign.
