Black people say cookout. You sound black. NTTAWWT

Only urban folk say “cookout”
What a stupid thread

I say “grill,” and I DGAF what anyone thinks.

If it's low and slow with smoke and moisture, that's BBQ.
If it's direct high heat, that's grilling.
I don't even know what a "cook out" is.

It's poorly stated by the OP, but I too have a pet peeve with people grilling hamburgers and hotdogs and calling it BBQ.
Same. Inviting someone over for BBQ is smoked chicken, ribs, pulled pork, brisket, etc.

Certain black people are literally the only ones I’ve ever heard call it a cookout. If you’re grilling or cooking anything on the barbecue pit, it’s a barbecue (or grill).
Cooking a pig in the ground is a couchon de lait.
So what you’re saying with this thread is that you really aren’t southern at all.

I normally think of cooking burgers and dogs as grilling, but had friends from 40 minutes down I-20 that put barbecue sauce on hamburger patties. They were the only people I knew who barbecued burgers.
I prefer my burgers and steaks grilled with a bit of garlic and ground pepper sprinkled on them 10-15 minutes before putting them on. I'm a medium rare steak guy. Go medium on my burgers, with a slice of sharp cheddar!
My black friends in Farmerville had cookouts that lasted all day. They cooked hotdogs and hamburgers for lunch on a grill, while they waited for ribs, chicken, turkey legs, and brisket that was cooking in smokers for dinner.
My mom's aunt used to have an old Frigidaire refrigerator that someone made into a smoker. She smoked briskets, hams ribs, chickens and turkeys in it. Cooked burgers in it too.
