When I took typing back in the Neolithic period we were taught to use 2 spaces between sentences.

I've changed from 2 to 1 with the constant variable spacing in MS Word. Under the old Word Perfect I would have said 2 all day. But the automatic variable spacing in Word, which you can't turn off, doesn't really display a difference between one space and two except in the unusual circumstance that it causes a word to move to the next line, creating ridiculous spacing in the remaining words in the line. So, the short and correct answer is, if you use Word, 1 space.

With the advent of proportionally spaced fonts, one space between a sentence has been acceptable. If you're going to use a monospaced font you should use 2 spaces between sentences.

I go with one space, but I use justified margins anyway so it spaces as needed. Justified margins looks better and settles any debate on this.

This. When I was going through middle school, they said use 2. Today all I ever see is 1.

I'm 25 and was taught one space. Two spaces were necessary for typewriters and that carries over through someone's life. I'd imagine most who learned how to type before the mid 90s uses two spaces.

I use 2 and 1 in the same paragraph. You know to spice things up.

Official MLA tyle is now one space. Two was easier to read when letters were spaced weirdly on typewriters. Now that letters are more central in modern fonts, your eyes can catch the punctuation easier, which negates the need for a double space.

Two spaces is easier on the eyes. It also separates those who care about doing things properly from those who are attempting to bastardize our written and spoken language in the interest of expediency.

This!!! I use "him/he/his". Not he/she, etc. F-that. When some one corrects me I tell them "dont correct and/or i'm speaking proper".

So why is there a push for only 1 space?? Havent heard about this. Just in the writing constraints things like you mention? Or other reasons?

Heck my phone is auto set for 2 spaces after I click space twice. Adds a period, and 2 spaces. Ha.

Two is now seen as pretentious.
