Not so much a "hammock" accident as a "falling bricks" accident.

Rip, and prayers for their parents

wtf kind of brick pillar are we talking about?

That was my exact thought first time I saw that picture.
And also masonry structures are not designed for tension forces placed upon them just what a hammock support placed somewhere along the middle of it would have put on it.

Wtf kind of mason builds a brick pillar that can’t hold the weight of two teenage girls in a hammock?
To be one, ask one.

I haven't seen a picture, but my guess is the hammock was tied to a tree on one end and probably a Pilar of some kind on their house. If it was on a column holding up the back patio for instance, then those bricks aren't structural. There's a metal pole in the middle and the brick is just a decorative casing around it. So it looks strong, but as the other poster mentioned, brick can support a heavy vertical load, but if a hook was drilled into it and then pulled, the brick would come apart easily and fall on whatever was in the area. It looks like the two girls in this case.

Brick has a of compressive strength, but lateral loads like that are its weakness. Truly sad.
yes, but it didn't say head injury, it said crushed. to crush even two medium sized people, this isn't some small pillar. I would also think it wasn't part of the house because those usually have a post inside supporting the load with the bricks used for looks.

Do you see a lot of brick pillars or hell any brick structures supporting lateral weight? Or do you see poles and shite that are designed for that purpose?

All jokes aside, I really feel for the parents. I don't know if they have other children, but I know if my two daughters were taken from me suddenly at the same time, I'd lose the will to live.
Yeah, I would be done.

Dad probably had the hammock too tight and it was close to parallel to the ground. As the angle between the direction of a load and rope/cable approaches 90degrees the tension in the rope/cable approaches infinity.
For example when the load is hanging directly under a 100lb rope then the rope can hold 100lbs. However, if the rope is hanging at 45 degrees then it can hold a lot less than 100lbs. There an equation for it but I can’t remember it off the top of my head. If the rope is stronger than the support holding it then the support will collapse.

The worst accident of my life involved a hammock. I somehow tripped over it and fell and hit my head. Afterwards, I kept asking what day it was, what time it was, etc. and everyone just blew it off like I was joking. Woke up the next morning and didn't know what day it was, but I did have a strange sense of euphoria.
I fricking hate hammocks.
